kind words and thoughts, He entered into their synagogue and found there a man whose hand was withered and use less. Again the religious leaders tried to trap Jesus by asking Him if it was ac cording to Moses’ law to heal on the sabbath day. The Lord Jesus reminded them that if they owned a sheep that fell into a hole on the sabbath day they would quickly lift the sheep out. Jesus then asked the question, “ How much then is a man better than a sheep?” Jesus added, “ It is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.” When the Saviour said to the sick man, “ Stretch forth thine hand,” he stretched it forth, and imme diately it became well like the other hand. Perhaps this man was not hand some; perhaps none of the religious leaders spoke to him or tried to help him in any way. To the Son of God he was a man who was valuable in God’s sight, a man who needed love and help and un derstanding. Perhaps there are children in your neighborhood or your school or adults in your town who are deformed or ugly or not as brilliant as you are. Other chil dren may “ copy” them and make fun of them and do unkind things when they are present. Boys and girls who have the love of the Lord Jesus within their hearts will love these people and be kind and helpful to them even though others may “make fun of them” for so doing. My God, permit me not to be A stranger to myself and Thee: Amidst a thousand thoughts I rove. Forgetful of my highest love. Why should my passions mix with earth. And thus debase my heavenly birth? Why should I cleave to things below. And let my God, my Saviour, go? Call me away from flesh and sense; One sovereign word can draw me thence; I would obey the voice divine. And all inferior joys resign. Be earth, with all her scenes, withdrawn; Let noise and vanity be gone; In secret silence of the mind My Heaven, and there my God, I find. —Isaac Watts

His should be in the house of worship on the Lord’s day. At the synagogue there was a man with a withered hand. His critics asked Him if it was lawful to heal on the Sabbath. They only asked the question in order to obtain something from Him that they might criticize (v. 10). Jesus’ answer was to the ef fect that it is always right to do acts of mercy at such a time (vv. 11, 12). From this we may get some suggestion as to the proper usage of the Lord’s day. It is a day set aside for the help of man. Acts of mercy are always in order. Dispensationally, the man with the withered hand suggests Israel. Our Lord had come to restore, but Israel, unlike the man, did not have faith to “ stretch forth thy hand.” However, when any. in dividual, Jew or Gentile, looks in faith to Jesus for healing, a miracle of grace results. Have you ever heard anyone say, “ There is one person that I simply can not love!” Those who love the Lord Jesus Christ will love everyone! They cannot love all that others do and say, but they will love the person himself, for the Lord Jesus died for that one just as much as He died for them. One day those who called themselves very religious criticized the Son of God and His disciples for picking corn on the sabbath day. These religious leaders loved their own godless ideas more than they loved other human beings who were hungry. After the Saviour had con demned these godless men for their un-
