1801 – NAVY YARD ESTABLISHED President John Adams, a New Englander, favors a strong central government and a navy capable of protecting commerce and defending a young nation in a dangerous and hostile world. At the end of his presidency (1797-1801), Adams moves quickly to authorize the establishment of the first five naval shipyards including Brooklyn. 2009 – GREEN INDUSTRY BNYDC finances the nation’s first multistory, multi-tenanted green industrial building and installs nation’s first wind/solar street lamps, designed by Navy Yard tenant Duggal Eco-Solutions. 2010-2014 – NEW CONSTRUCTION Among 12 new buildings in design or construction are the Duggal Greenhouse, an adaptive reuse of a low-employment warehouse in the Yard into a highemployment sustainable design center; and the adaptive reuse of a 220,000 square foot former machine shop as the Green Manufacturing Center. Brooklyn Navy Yard Converts to Face Shield Production at Duggal Greenhouse, More Than 2.6 Million Face Shields Delivered COVID-19 RESPONSE

Brooklyn venue since March bid farewell to the project commissioned by New York City, with a final tally of 2,635,000 face shields provided to first responders. Workers from all backgrounds and professions beamed with bittersweet pride as Michael Duggal, CEO of Duggal Visual Solutions, thanked them for

their courage and commitment through New York’s coronavirus siege. “For the rest of your lives, you know you were essential to your city, your state, your country and to each other,” Duggal said. “You took care of all those people, and I could not be prouder of what we’ve accomplished together.” As New York City hospitals battled one of the most severe coronavirus outbreaks in the world, Duggal Visual Solutions quickly shifted its production from printed graphics to face shields and other PPE equipment, partnering with Brooklyn Navy Yard neighbor Bednark Studio to scale the operation, retain staff from both companies, give jobs to local artists and meet the dire need for PPE. Staff from Duggal Visual Solutions and Bednark Studio—both headquartered in the Brooklyn Navy Yard— worked around the clock at Duggal’s Brooklyn venue, the Duggal Greenhouse, to fabricate shield shields being distributed to first responders. The idea stemmed from a direct conversation between Duggal CEO Michael Duggal and Bednark CEO Michael Bednark, who realized that the two companies together had the production capabilities to convert from printing and graphics to personal protective equipment (PPE).

48

49

Duggal and Bednark delivered the first 50,000 face shields to first responders on March 28, less than a week after receiving the go- ahead from the city’s Health Department to begin manufacturing in the Greenhouse. Our motto as we forged ahead: “MAKING THINGS BETTER TOGETHER.” Reliving its roots in what NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio described as a “wartime factory,” the Duggal Greenhouse served as a large and accessible space for PPE production to take place in a safe and socially distant manner. There were zero reported coronavirus cases during the entire project. “This is just an inspiring, beautiful effort, and we’re going to make sure New Yorkers see a lot about this and understand how powerful this is,” de Blasio said. “You’re going to see a surgical mask, gloves, surgical gowns, all sorts of things being made right here in New York City manufactured right here to protect our fellow New Yorkers.” “If our city, our state and our country need us again, I know we’ll be here. And I know you’ll be here,” Duggal said. “I hope they don’t. But if they do, we know we’re made of tough stuff.”
