WRITER and director James Gray is taking a break from his career spear- heading offbeat minor blockbusters ( Ad Astra , The Lost City of Z ) to re- turn to the autobiographical. A vocal descendant of Ukrainian Jews, his debut feature, 1994’s Little Odessa , was also about Jewish immigrants in New York City struggling with the Russian mafia. With Paper Tiger , set in 1980s Queens, he appears to be returning to these roots. In the pro- cess, he’s reuniting Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver, who oozed Jew-
ish dramedy in Noah Baumbach’s opus Marriage Story . (Johansson is Jewish; Driver is not, but was nominated for an Oscar for playing one in BlacKkKlansman and is mistaken as Jewish so often that we happily count him.) Michael Fraiman

DRUMMER AND COMPOSER Lorie Wolf is already known for several projects, including the Toronto Klezmer Society jams (which she leads) and wedding band The Horah Machine. Now her other band, Queen Kong, is making its recorded debut with a collection of original songs named for the dances that family and friends do for brides at Jewish weddings. The band features players from Toronto live acts including the horn-laden Heavyweights Brass Band and the energetic Lemon Bucket Orkestra; their compositions appear on the album alongside Wolf’s. Wolf is one of the few women drum-
mers in the local scene playing klezmer specifically, and jazz a little more broadly; in this album, she blends those musical elements with the “Radical Jewish Culture” influences of avant-garde composer John Zorn. Melding Jewish ritual elements, concert music, and dance party vibes, the album explores and subverts music — and tradition — dating back centuries. Jonathan Rothman
