given in the Introduction and is as fol lows : “We shall examine the different pas sages in which prayer is mentioned, point out the different forms of prayer, the circumstances under which the prayers were prayed, the answered prayers, the unanswered prayers,., and the prayers which have a prophetic significance, being connected with future events., We shall show the place of prayer in the lives of the ,01d Testament characters, the place of prayer and the promises of prayer as connected with, the life of our Lord, and prayer in the Epistles. Then, after this examination we shall give a summary as to prayer, pointing out the great value of prayer and its efficacy and conditions.” After laying out the plan of the boob, Dr. Gaebelein sets himself carefully to the task of, collating all the instances of prayer as fax as the book of Psalms. This collation amounts in many cases to little more than a cataloguing, since the size of the book is limited. The Psalms are so full, of prayer that Dr. Gaebelein does not attempt to instance every case, but summarizes these wonderful expressions of faith in two pages. The Psalms may “be called The Prayer book of the Lord Jesus Christ.” Far-reaching understanding, of the prophetical books is evidenced by the comments on the prayers in these books. The prayers of the New Testament are collated, but full comment or elaboration is; not .attempted. For’example, but seven lines are given to the Lord’s reply to the request of His disciples in the eleventh of Luke that He teach them to pray. In the second part of the book, which treats of “Prayer and Its Lessons accord ing to the Holy Scriptures,” the history of prayer is given, definitions of the various kinds of prayer, the conditions of prevail ing prayer, the disaster o f .prayerlessness, and .scriptural incitements to fidelity in prayer. The book does-not attempt an exhaus tive study of prayer within the very close limits adhered to, but may be depended upon to state1with accuracy the facts un covered by very close scrutiny of the en tire Bible in search of instances of prayer and the outstanding principles involved in successful intercession. —H. W. K. This important contribution to foreign missionary literature comes from the pen of one eminently fitted to discuss the sub ject at hand. Dr. Reischauer has spent twenty years on the mission fields in the Orient. He is at present Professor of Comparative Religions, Meiji Gakuin, Tokyo, and Executive Secretary, Wo men’s Christian College of Japan. This volume contains the substance of lee-, tures delivered at Princeton and McCor mick Theological Seminary, and other schools of the United States in 1925. It is the product of a discerning, highly “The Task In Japan”'’ : By August Karl Reischauer, D.D.

trained mind. It is written in a clear, positive, logical style. Its appeal is. to the student of Missions. It is packed with information. Three of its chapters pre sent a splendid study of Buddhism,.Shin toism, and The Newer Naturalismj as they relate themselves to modern Japa nese life and the progress of Christianity. The discussion of the “Present Status of Christianity in Japan” is worth the price of the book to anyone with an intelligent interest in the Kingdom task in the Sun rise Kingdom. . A book well worth read ing . . . and a re-reading. (Revell $1.50). A. F. K.
