A CURATED SELECTION OF GREAT CARDS

34. 1909-11 T206 Polar Bear Ty Cobb (HOF - Red Background) - SGC VG/EX+ 4.5

32. 1909-11 E90-1 American Caramel Cy Young (HOF) - SGC VG 3

Colorful E90-1 card of Cy Young, pictured near the very end of his career as he returned to the city where he made his name as the star pitcher for the National League’s Cleveland Spiders, although as a member of the AL’s Cleveland Naps this time around. Traded by the Red Sox to Cleveland in February 1909, this is the tougher of his two cards in the E90-1 set. Neither SGC or PSA has any of his Cleveland cards in a grade higher than 5 and this is a really nice example, with

a bold burnt orange background and excellent registration. The cut is typical for the issue and a few minor flaws can be seen along the outside borders and corners, but none detracting from the overall aesthetics of the card. The reverse is strong, free of the paper loss often seen on these cards.

Rich, colorful midgrade specimen with light corner wear and some very mild soiling at the bottom border causing a slight reduction in the technical grade, with little impact on the eye appeal. The more difficult Polar Bear reverse adds considerable desirability to an already-popular card, one of the most recognizable in the T206 set. A red background Cobb is a must for most advanced prewar collections; this example is a clean, bold one with outstanding color and sharp registration.

The American Caramel E90- 1’s are sometimes referred to as the T206 of caramel sets, and have been dubbed “The Kraken” in some quarters as collecting the 120 subjects found within presents challenges of all sorts, having confounded hobbyists for many decades. Ty Cobb is among the many Hall-of-Famers in the set, which was issued with stick of caramel that, as one might imagine, led to some pretty sticky early handling situations. This obverse of this example was spared some of the more direct

Well-centered with moderate wear, mostly restricted to the edges of the card. Well- rounded corners are consistent with the technical grade. One of Cobb’s most underrated cards, from an issue that is bound to gain popularity as deadball era collectors begin searching for value in the hobby. 35. 1910-11 M116 Sporting Life Ty Cobb (HOF) - SGC GD 2 example

results of that and presents with a bit of a funky cut, testament to the manual cutting operations employed at the time. The SGC 2 grade seems apt given the circumstances documented on the front, noting the reverse graphics are all intact, albeit showing two smears of 110+ year old caramel no doubt left there by the original purchaser. Regardless, a strong, collector-grade specimen, one of the key cards to this challenging set.
