52. Gorgeous 1934 Goudey #61 Lou Gehrig (HOF) - SGC EX/NM 6

The Yankee Clipper looks like he just smacked a double down the line on his 1941 Play Ball card, which captured DiMaggio in the midst of his historic 56 game hit- streak season. The PSA 4 example seen here shows some light handling, mostly noticeable in the corners. Some minor surface wear is visible, primarily on the darker portion of the background, but the color remains vivid, the image sharper than what is often encountered with this card. The reverse looks quite nice and clean. 54. 1941 Play Ball #71 Joe DiMaggio (HOF) - PSA VG-EX 4 MINIMUM BID: $1,000

The 1934 Goudey issue included two cards of endorser Lou Gehrig, and it is the #37 portrait card that is often considered the most iconic cardboard image of the Yankee Captain. Because of its extreme popularity, the issue’s second card is often overlooked, but is also quite beautiful and slightly more difficult than the portrait card. Featuring the Iron Horse swinging his bat, the card is set against a blue-green background, the blues and greens creating an appealing palette, one of the more pleasing cards in the set.

This example is well-centered and sharp for the grade, some light corner wear and mild toning conspiring to keep the card from a higher holder but certainly not disruptive. The image is superb, sharp and colorful with rich color, some very light soiling visible at the left border and underneath Gehrig’s bat barrel. An extremely strong card, one of the finest we have handled.

55. 1947 Bond Bread #37 Jackie Robinson (HOF RC) - SGC PR 1

The victim of some confusion among collectors and price guide archivists over the years, this Bond Bread set (“Homogenized Bond” in some references, both being correct) featuring black and white cards with rounded corners, was issued in 1947 and featured 44 baseball players and 4 boxers. Sometimes confused with the 13 card Bond Bread set of Jackie Robinson cards of the same era, the set in question here was printed on thin cardboard and seemingly distributed via several different channels. Indeed the American Card

53. 1938 Goudey #274 Joe DiMaggio (HOF) - PSA VG 3

Here’s tremendous-looking example of the very popular 1938 Goudey Heads Up Joe DiMaggio card. Issued with and without the cartoon illustrations surrounding the player in 1938, this version happily includes them and all for the better. Featuring some of the nicest corners you might ever see on a PSA 3, this example remains bright and the toothsome and colorful Joe D. floating head pose is crystal clear. The reverse, with it’s empty promise of 312 Baseball Stars (this series bizarrely picked up the numbering from the 1933 set yet still failed to a

Catalog has given it two designations: D305 and W571. Considering it is one of the first postwar sets and given that it features Jackie Robinson in his rookie season with Brooklyn, the set has a fair bit of historical gravitas despite somewhat nebulous origins and distribution. This SGC 10 is typical of the issue, displaying print lines and slightly imprecise cutting, a fault often seen on cards with factory rounded corners. The image is fairly strong for the issue and the biggest problem is with the reverse, where scrapbook residue is evident on all four corners; it appears a spot of glue has leaked through to the front as well. As one of the first Jackie Robinson cards to be issued certainly qualifying as a “rookie” card of the sports hero, it’s a landmark card for sure.

fully deliver!) is another in-grade winner. Consigned from an original owner collection, the card is simply fantastic, as nice a PSA 3 as you will ever see, the NM appearance of the card marred only by light wrinkles in the paper above Gehrig’s bat barrel, flaws that likely existed when the card was manufactured and not the result of wear or handling.
