A CURATED SELECTION OF GREAT CARDS

56. 1949 Bowman #224 Satchel Paige (HOF RC) - SGC VG 3

58. 1951 Bowman #253 Mickey Mantle (HOF RC) - SGC VG 3

Satchel (no second “l” needed) Paige may have seemed ageless but thanks to the color line he didn’t get his chance in the majors until 1948 at the age of 42, when Bill Veeck got him into a Cleveland uniform midseason and he appeared in 21 games that year, primarily as a reliever. Good fortune smiled upon Ol’ Satch and he ended up with a World Series ring for his troubles. His 1949 Bowman rookie card is considered one of the keys to the set and his debut card was a beauty. The 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle rookie has, for several decades now, not attracted the attention brought by the 1952 Topps card, but in recent years it has begun to be noticed for what it is - and why not? It’s the rookie card of an iconic player, who is arguably the biggest name in the hobby and it resides in a popular set. The SGC 3 example presented here is an extremely nice card for the grade, with an obverse many higher ranked slabs would envy. The blues are fabulous, from the rich, darker hues in the Mick’s Yankees cap to the more subtle tones of sky blue that form the background. The image is a bit up and to the right yet retains an appealing look, with centering that remains stronger than that of the typical example of this card. The reverse is bright and legible, looking quite fresh, with only some mild staining along the left edge. Overall, this card is a a real looker and one of the key Hall of Fame rookie cards in the hobby.

typical chipping, especially at the corners, that 1949’s are infamous for, which has resulted in the assigned grade. The centering is excellent and the image of Paige is crisp and clear. The reverse is legible and centered as well, with some wax stains evident. A very strong looking card for the grade.

Jackie Robinson cards have been among the most popular in the hobby over the last two or three years and show no signs of slowing down. This SGC 55 example of Robinson’s 1950 Bowman card marked his second and final appearance with the company, and the pose is a classic one as he follows through on a BP swing. Some wear shows at the upper left on the obverse, well away from the image of Robinson and the back exhibits some light foxing, yielding the grade assessed here by SGC. As the years pass, his legend grows. 57. 1950 Bowman #22 Jackie Robinson (HOF) - SGC VG/EX+ 4.5 MINIMUM BID: $1,000

59. 1952 Berk Ross Jackie Robinson (HOF) - PSA NM 7

Very nice PSA 7 example of Jackie Robinson’s 1952 Berk-Ross card, with a wonderful shot of Ebbets Field’s center-right outfield adding to the action shot of Robinson leaping high in a posed action shot that captures his signature pigeon- toed feet in motion. The color and registration are in sync here and the card is quite clean front and back.

Robinson cards are showing no sign of letup among collectors and some of his more obscure cards are attracting outsize attention as his early regular issue cards are rocketing in value. A high-grade beauty from a set that is notoriously condition-sensitive.

MINIMUM BID: $750
