After a day off, the Yankees broke up a scoreless duel with four singles off Hugh Casey in the eighth inning and held on for a 2-1 win. Game 4 was another tight game. Reiser’s 2-run homer in the fifth gave the Dodgers a 4-3 lead, and that is how matters stood heading into the ninth. Casey, who had been brilliant in relief since the fifth, retired the first two Yankees and seemed to have struck out Tommy Henrich to tie up the series. Unfortunately, the third strike eluded Dodger catcher Mickey Owen, allowing
Henrich to reach first and keep the Yankees alive, if just barely. What happened next is what often happens when you give a great team an extra chance: single by Joe DiMaggio, two-run double by Charlie Keller, walk, two-run double by Joe Gordon. The Yankees held on to their 7-4 lead, and Tiny Bonham closed it out with a four-hitter in Game 5. The Dodgers offense (11 runs in 5 games) might have been the biggest problem, but Owen’s passed ball in Game 4 will always be the defining moment of the series.
