Love of the Game Auctions - 10th Anniversary Auction

1956

Don Larsen, who had been roughed up in Game 2, pitched a 2-0 perfect game, the first no-hitter in World Series history. Game 6 was nearly as dramatic, as both teams were scoreless through nine innings. In the bottom of the tenth inning, Jim Gilliam drew a one-out walk, was sacrificed to second, then scored on walk-off Jackie Robinson single. After two classic contests, what kind of drama would Game 7 bring? None, it turned out. Yogi Berra hit a two-run home run off Don Newcombe in the first inning, and the Yankees poured it on from there, winning 9-0. Johnny Kucks, a surprise 18-game winner during the season making his first and only career Series start, closed out the season with a three-hit shutout. Pee Wee Reese played in all 44 of these games, and graced us the same excel- lent baseball he was known for during his long career. But it is remarkable how this Dodger-Yankee story has come to be dominated not by Reese, or Robinson, or Mantle, or DiMaggio, but by a series of much less famous players who took over the spotlight for a game or a series. Bevens, Lavagetto, Gionfriddo, Kuzava, Amoros, Larsen, Kucks, and many more. The fortunate people who were able to attend one of these games, surely hoped that one of their team’s legendary heroes would lead his team to victory. But in baseball, as this great rivalry taught us, one should expect the unexpected. Nearly seven decades later, we remember all of them, the stars and the jour- neymen, and their heroic deeds.
