Modern Mining September 2026

As underground mines become deeper and more complex, close collaboration between operators, technology providers and other stakeholders is paramount.

By aligning drilling accuracy with explosive loading on a hole-by-hole basis, ECUs eliminate inconsistencies in explosive distribution and improve powder factor control. Parameters such as burden, spacing, density and energy targets are applied consistently, resulting in more uniform energy input. The benefits extend well beyond the blast itself. Improved fragmentation reduces oversize and fines, increasing loader productivity and easing pressure on crushers. Vibration, wall damage and dilution are also reduced, which is particularly important in deep or narrowvein operations with variable geology. Digital initiation and closedloop optimisation These capabilities are reinforced by BME’s AXXIS™ electronic detonator system and BlastMap™ digital blasting platform. AXXIS™ delivers millisecondprecise initiation, improving sequencing accuracy and reducing timing scatter to enhance fragmentation consistency and lower vibration. BlastMap™ enables simulation and optimisation of blast designs using geological and energy distribution data, allowing engineers to predict blast response and fragmentation outcomes before firing. “Together, these technologies create a closed- loop system that links design, execution and performance,” Menezes said. “The result is reduced variability, continuous optimisation and more predictable downstream performance.” Energy efficiency and transparency Optimised blasting also delivers significant energy benefits downstream. fragmentation reduces the energy required for loading, hauling and comminution, lowering overall energy use per tonne mined. Digital systems provide realtime visibility into blast performance, vibration, energy distribution and environmental impact. Electronic initiation systems generate detailed firing logs that can be correlated with fragmentation results, blast movement and vibration measurements. “When combined with analytics, this data enables objective evaluation of indicators such as peak particle velocity, energy efficiency and burden response,” Menezes said. The availability of structured, auditable data also strengthens compliance and ESG reporting by linking blast design, execution and outcomes into a verifiable performance chain. Collaboration for longterm resilience As underground mines become deeper and more complex, Menezes emphasised the importance of close collaboration between operators, technology providers and other stakeholders. “Integrated blasting is not just about technology — it’s about partnership,” Menezes concluded. “By working together, mines and suppliers can develop tailored solutions that match increasingly challenging underground conditions, delivering consistent performance, improved safety and greater operational resilience over the long term.” n
