My Wish for National Make Your Dream Come True Day THE POWER OF TEACHING A MAN TO FISH

water filters for people in Nicaragua’s El Mango community and treated 250 patients at a pop-up health clinic. It was incredibly empowering for them, and it embodied the kind of volunteer work I’d love to do more of. I’m a big believer in the saying, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” CEPAD does this by spending five years at a time in various communities teaching sustainable agriculture, encouraging leadership development, and offering microloans to women and children to help them open their own businesses. All of those things encourage permanent, systemic change, and impact hundreds of lives. We have some incredible organizations right here in North Carolina doing that same work on a person-by-person scale. One that I’ve supported for years, and would love to contribute to more, is the Boys & Girls Club. It’s heartbreaking to see so many kids whose parents can’t support them, and they need mentors. Yet, I’ve found it can also be incredibly rewarding to watch a mentor-mentee relationship turn someone’s life around. Years ago, here at our local Boys & Girls Club, a 13-year-old boy who was there to get help wound up in a screaming match with the man in charge. He yelled curses at him, then took off for home, only to find a note from his mother that said she could no longer take care of him and he was on his own. The boy ran right back to the club, and the man he’d just sworn at took him in. From there, he was adopted, went to college on scholarship, and came back to North Carolina to become a Boys & Girls Club mentor himself. His life was utterly changed just because someone took a chance on him, and now he’s teaching others to fish, too. I hope in the next fewmonths, years, or decades, I get the opportunity to live out my big dream of giving back every day. In the meantime, my team and I are always willing to lend a helping hand, so if you have a cause you’d like to bring to our attention (or if you’d just like to place an order) give us a call at 866-318-3251. Together, we can teach a legion of fishermen. HAVE YOU GOTTEN YOUR CHIROBUCKS YET? True Day? I didn’t either until a friend mentioned it to me

a fewweeks back, but now I’ve found

myself dwelling on New Year’s dreams instead of NewYear’s resolutions — although I suppose the two aren’t that far apart.

It sounds like a lie, but if I could live any dream and money were no object, I honestly think I’d still be doing what I’m doing. I find a lot of fulfillment in helping hardworking chiropractors make their patients’ lives

better, and I look forward to coming into work every day, carrying on my

dad’s business legacy, and giving back in my free time. Maybe the real answer is that I’d like to do more of all that, particularly giving back to those who need it.

Early on in my career, I thought all I wanted was to work hard, retire

early, and live an easy life. But as the years went by and I matured, I realized life isn’t worth living unless you have something you truly care

about to focus on: a mission that goes beyond your work at the office, and that you can carry on for the rest of your life. My mission is giving back through charity work and volunteering. If my resources were unlimited, I’d still keep my hand in Chiro1Source, but I’d also travel more and do more extensive work with charitable organizations. A fewmonths ago, I wrote in this newsletter about a mission trip I took to Nicaragua in 2016. I went with a group called CEPAD, and during the week I was there, we built dozens of

With Simple, Actionable Goals HELP YOUR KIDS ACHIEVE MORE THIS YEAR With every new year comes an opportunity to reinvent ourselves or start down a new path toward self-improvement. Making resolutions is a big part of many families’ New Year’s traditions, and parents often have a desire for their kids to take part in that tradition when they’re old enough. Following through on resolutions is tough, especially for young children, but with your help, they can achieve their goals.

The Apex Cervical ARE Y NEC

Back in 2014, the chief of spine surgery at New York Spine Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine told the Washington Post that text neck — poor posture caused by staring down at a smart phone — was an epidemic. Can you believe that was six years ago? Since then, advances in technology have made us increasingly dependent on our phones, and the epidemic has only spread! When you add in whiplash sufferers and those with naturally poor posture or bad sleeping habits, the number of people suffering from neck pain becomes staggering. You probably see patients with these problems in your clinic every day, which is why we’ve been working hard to source a product that addresses them in a newway. This winter, we debuted the Apex Cervical Orthosis Premium, which we’re proud to say does just that! With daily, supervised use, the ACOP can counteract forward head posture and help relieve headaches and neck pain. The ACOP is similar to a therapeutica pillow, but its contoured shape includes a unique wedge extension that provides firm support, placing the patient’s neck in a proper position to help reestablish a

Practice what you preach.

You are your children’s role model for almost everything, including following through on New Year’s resolutions. So, ask yourself if you follow through on your own resolutions. When you proclaim that you will read more books or finally get a gym membership, do you actually try to do it? Your kids will assign as much importance to New Year’s resolutions as you do, so by sticking to your own commitments, you can help them stay on track too.

Keep things simple and achievable.

When your kids are forming their resolutions, their first attempts will probably be very broad. Statements like “I want to be more kind” or “I will try to help more around the house” incorporate good values but don’t include any actionable steps. Help your kids think of tangible ways to act on those goals. For example, if they want to be tidier, a good resolution might be for them to clean their room once a week or take responsibility for one household chore every day. While it’s important for you to help your kids formulate their goals, be sure that you aren’t taking over. If they’re ultimately responsible for their resolutions, they’ll feel more compelled to keep them. Instead, suggest different goal areas they could improve, such as home, school, or sports, and let them elaborate. When it comes to creating habits, nobody is perfect, so even if your kids falter on their goals in the middle of February, don’t worry. The important thing is that you continue to encourage them every step of the way. Don’t do all the work for them.

diminished cervical curve. The extension also supports the upper thoracic spine for comfort and allows the patient’s shoulders to drop, stretching the chest and neck muscles. Even better, the product is easy to move up or down for comfort, and comes in two versions: one unheated, and the other with a heat pack that patients can microwave for additional relief. This time of year, patients love the heated ACOP, which is just the thing to ward off a cold night! From the Mind of Our In-House Business Guru 3 RESOLUTIONS TO MAKE FOR YOUR BUSINESS IN 2020

Here at Chiro1Source, we believe one of the hallmarks of a successful company is the ability to be humble. If you want to improve as a business, you need to be constantly on the lookout for your weak spots and willing to take expert advice to fix them! It was with that philosophy in mind that we brought business consultant Randy Alexander on board 10 years ago. Randy’s background is in big business and venture capital, but more than a decade ago, he struck out on his own to become a consultant for small and mid-sized companies. His goal is to teach entrepreneurs how to successfully manage their businesses so they can focus on doing what they love. Randy drops by the Chiro1Source office once a week to check in with Josh and our team and give us tips on being the best business we can be. “Honestly, venture capital is not a nice business,” Randy says. “A lot of privately- owned companies end up taking on investors and essentially giving over their businesses. Now, I’m supporting small business owners, and I get to work with really good people who are trying to do the right thing.” 1. Resolve to take total ownership of your business. If an initiative isn’t going well or a process needs to be improved, it’s your job as the business owner to step up and take care of it. Putting off your responsibilities won’t get you anywhere! 2. Resolve to enjoy yourself. If your career has lost the spark it once held, it’s time to evaluate your day-to-day tasks and figure out which ones are making your job unpleasant. If dealing with paperwork or answering the phone gets you down, delegate those things. Once you enjoy your job again, your patients will notice the change! 3. Resolve to find a purpose. If your business isn’t already supporting a charity, cause, or community effort, resolve to find one you care about this year and offer a hand. Not only will this excite you about your goals, it will also bring your team closer together! Because many of you are business owners too, we asked Randy to share three smart resolutions to make for your business in 2020. Here’s his list:

3 Resolutions to Make for Your Business in 2020 3 Using Facebook Live to Strengthen Your Marketing 4

And Making Your Broadcast a Success 3 ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR USING FACEBOOK LIVE

Facebook Live has been available to Facebook users for years now, but many business owners still haven’t taken advantage of this powerful customer engagement resource. Essentially, this technology gives users the ability to broadcast live from their Facebook account. For businesses, a gold mine of opportunity is opened to connect with customers and prospects in real time. Some companies utilize it for product launches, rebranding, general announcements, or directly engaging with potential customers. That said, a poorly executed broadcast can leave you with more issues than you started with. With that in mind, here are some essential tips to ensure your Facebook Live videos strengthen your marketing instead of weaken it. 1. Record for at least 10 minutes. If you set out to broadcast for 45 seconds, your content isn’t going to reach anyone in your target audience. A good rule of thumb is to create enough content so that your event reaches at least 10 minutes. With an average broadcast time of 10 minutes, your audience will have more opportunity to see your content, and you’ll reach the highest number of people possible.

2. Prioritize good production quality. You don’t need to be a professional videographer to develop quality video content, but a poor broadcast could damage your brand. For example, your viewers will be distracted if you use an unsteady camera, so invest in equipment to keep your broadcast steady, like a tripod. In addition, make sure your environment is completely quiet so your audience can focus on your content without hindrance. If you plan on having more than one person in the video, use microphones to ensure your audience can hear you. 3. Engagewith the comment section. You could be alienating the audience you’re trying to engage by failing to respond to questions in the comment feed. Facebook Live isn’t just about broadcasting yourself; it’s also about communicating with your viewers directly to develop relationships with them. And as an added bonus, viewers’ comments can give you valuable feedback and consumer insights. It takes effort, but putting in the time to respond is well worth it to show you care about your audience’s opinions. These tips only scratch the surface of making your Facebook Live event a success, but they offer a good starting point. Before you dive in, know that Facebook’s platform changes periodically, so be sure to test Facebook Live on your personal page to familiarize yourself with the updated format. And to stay up to date on all of Facebook’s updates, check out their new newsroom at Newsroom.FB.com.
