EVER-INCREASING INTEGRATION WITH DIGITALISATION... Digitalisation and fire safety

A s an industry with safety as a primary function, fire protection has tended to be rather slow-moving due to the intensive regulatory framework surrounding it. Presently, however, the industry is being increasingly caught up in the exciting world of I-O-T and data analysis. What advantages will this new world bring and how will the industry maintain safety at the heart of all it does? To date, user experience of fire detection and alarm systems has been characterised by the limited view available through the fire alarm control panel. These panels are heavily regulated and there is only so much that can be done to enhance the user experience. With training, a user can interrogate and operate the system satisfactorily, but it is not always intuitive. This creates real problems when training provision for staff is lacking, especially in environments where there is a high turnover of staff. With the trend for digitalisation and system connectivity, products such as Cerberus PRO offer inbuilt connectivity to the cloud, which allows for a significantly more intuitive user interaction. Features that are used less

frequently, such as the event memory, can now be easily viewed and clearly represented. In addition, as the data is held in the cloud, the amount of data available is increased dramatically. Users now gain real insights into their system’s availability, false alarm rates, maintenance activities and user operation. Beyond the panel, devices in the field are also becoming much more connected and can share insightful data with both the engineer and the user. This includes environmental information that can be analysed to reduce false alarms or identify risky behaviour. Device health can be closely monitored, and maintenance planned accordingly, leading to reduced costs and improved system reliability. Connectivity enhances the response to system events and faults are immediately reported and can be acted upon by both the end-user and the service organisation. Engineers can

can be made more visible to a greater number of staff. This can speed response and provide greater potential for dealing with small incidents before any damage is caused. Service organisations are aided greatly, and test plans can be created, performed and reported in one seamless workflow. Systems can be supported remotely to provide help and training to customers or lesser skilled engineers.

Finally, digitalisation offers the opportunity of ever-increasing

integration and information can be shared with other systems to increase safety and efficiency.
