Regular electrical safety checks included in new bill for Northern Ireland

In March the Northern Ireland Assembly passed the Private Tenancies Bill. The Bill includes a requirement to introduce regular electrical safety checks for private tenants in NI. Electrical Safety First is campaigning for all tenants, regardless of tenure, to be afforded the same safety standards across the UK. Karter Kane, Policy and Public Affairs Advisor for NI with Electrical Safety First commented: “Electrical Safety First has long campaigned for regular electrical checks in Northern Ireland’s private rented sector (PRS), so we were delighted that they have been included in the Private Tenancies Bill. “As the Minister (Deirdre Hargey) herself has noted, electrical checks are a long- overdue safety fundamental. However,

we believe the Bill can be made stronger and more effective by stipulating that those safety checks of electrical installations are undertaken regularly – we believe it should be every five years.” She added: “We’re delighted to see the Northern Ireland Assembly pass the Private Tenancies Bill (15 March). The bill includes a requirement to introduce regular electrical safety checks for private tenants in Northern Ireland. “We’re campaigning for all tenants – regardless of tenure – to be afforded the same safety standards

across the UK. And this commitment is one step closer to achieving that goal.”

Memorial cycle/walk to raise funds for Cancer Research

Braham Electrical, in honour of Paul Braham, is hosting, along with Newry Lions Club, a memorial leisure cycle/walk in aid of Cancer Research UK and N. Ireland. Paul was a hard working and dedicated individual who founded Braham Electrical over 49 years ago. Those who knew Paul personally would have known he had family and community spirit in abundance and supported every local event going. When Paul sadly passed away in September of last year, dozens of tributes were shared from those

who knew him and remembered him for his good character, generosity, and service to the community. The Paul Braham Memorial walk/cycle will take place on Sunday, 24 April. Those who plan to cycle will take off from the Albert Basin in Newry at 9am, while walkers will set off from the same location at 10am. Both groups will finish at Carlingford. New quality scheme for circular economy in lighting

Industry leaders have backed a new circular economy assurance scheme designed to support the accuracy of circular economy claims from lighting manufacturers and suppliers. Set up by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and the Lighting Industry Association (LIA), the TM66 Circular Economy Assured Scheme will provide a quality mark for the design and manufacture of lighting products. Supporting the recently published ‘TM66 Creating a circular economy in the lighting industry’ and accompanying Circular Economy Assessment Methods (CEAM), the scheme forms part of this tool kit for manufacturers and specifiers to assess the circular credentials of products.

David Barnwell, Managing Director of Holophane Europe Ltd commented: “The TM66 Circular Economy Assured scheme provides participating manufacturers with a way to demonstrate their sustainability and provides a clear differentiation from unsubstantiated greenwash”. The scheme combines CIBSE’s deep sustainability knowledge and UKAS accredited certification expertise with the LIA’s Quality Assurance systems and independent UKAS accredited laboratory. Call for Ireland’s electrical industry to play their part

A non-profit initiative is seeking the goodwill of Irish businesses in helping Ukrainian refugees now living in Ireland. The ‘Tech for Good Dublin’ community launched a new website at the end of March, ‘Pryvit’ to assist refugees with deals and services on a wide range of offers. Speaking to Ireland’s Electrical Magazine about the initiative, Talita Holzer, Managing Director at GoingFar, the organisation behind the idea, said: “Pryvit means hello in Ukrainian, and the aim is to allow people who have been displaced by the war to access special offers, discounted goods and services listed by Irish businesses. It facilitates companies across Ireland to place a ‘welcome offer’ of discounted or free goods to those arriving from Ukraine. If anyone from the electrical industry could offer their services, whether that be in the form of free services/goods or even career advice, they can list it up on the Pryvit website. Huge challenges facing Ireland’s EV charging infrastructure

An independent report commissioned for The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) has found that 100,000 EV charging points are needed in the country, yet only 1,900 are in place. The report, which was released by Arup and economist, Jim Power, on reducing light fleet carbon emissions to achieve government targets highlighted that the goal will be a “huge challenge” unless the Government incentivises and supports dealing with the oldest

polluting cars, while also increasing the charging infrastructure nationwide which has fallen behind. The report stated that in order to support the proposed one million EVs on the road by 2030, 100,000 public chargers will be needed here. As it stands, the number of charging points falls short of the 4,700 required as there are 1,900 chargers at 800 sites across Ireland, and 47,000 EVs now on the roads. NICEIC mental health episode hits the spot with contractors

NICEIC has responded to the increasing need for mental health support amongst contractors by dedicating an episode of their hit webinar series The Wire to the topic. Danny Mouskovias, NICEIC’s Learning Design and Delivery Manager, who led the session said: “It is a fact, mental illness is a plague that blights our industry more so than others. Statistics show electrical sector workers are 34% more likely to be diagnosed with a complex mental illness. “This is why it was so important for us to give support to our contractors, and given the numbers in attendance, and the comments received, it seems we have hit

the spot which is really great.” Focusing on identifying the signs and symptoms of mental ill-health, the session provided practical steps to help manage stress and anxiety.

CABLES

FIRE-RESISTANT CABLES FORM PART OF THE EMERGENCY AND ESSENTIAL BUILDING SERVICE SYSTEMS REQUIRED TO OPERATE IN THE EVENT OF FIRE... Prysmian continues to lead the way with the FP range of products

F or some time now, the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) has specified FP Plus on all developments at Dublin Airport, using extensive quantities in the Terminal 2 Building and on an ongoing basis as development and upgrading continues at Terminal 1 and other buildings in the Airport Campus. Other projects completed to date and some which are still ongoing, all specify FP Performance cables. These include Fibonacci Square (Facebook Headquarters in Dublin), Coopers Cross Residential and Commercial, Amazon, and Linkedin in the capital, to name but a few. Why is the FP range in demand? According to Cathal Grace, Sales Director at Precision Cables: “Safety is the number one reason we hear from contractors. There is a big emphasis on using good quality cables, so when specifying cables for life safety, most try to specify Prysmian as the quality is second to none.” “Our customers need to ensure they have 100% faith in the quality of the cable and confidence in the manufacturer,” he continued. “Our cables have been analysed in real construction projects. The findings revealed a superior level of safety, increased energy efficiency and savings on installation time of up to

In the unfortunate event of fire, Prysmian’s fire-resistant cable retains vital circuit integrity, which reduces the risks involved in evacuation. “Prysmian continues to lead the way with the FP range of products, meaning a considerable saving on total project cost. ECA DINNER EVENT IS HIGHLIGHT OF THE YEAR... Triumphant return to branch dinner

E lectrical Contractors Association (ECA) held its Northern Ireland region ECA dinner on Friday, 4 March at the Culloden Hotel, Holywood. This was the first opportunity in two years for members to take part in the dinner after the cancellation of the event due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Branch Chairman, Colin Cherry addressed those in attendance by welcoming everyone to the evening and paid homage to those individuals who have sadly passed away in the last year and who had made a huge contribution during their service to the industry. Paul Braham, founder of Braham Electrical and a great supporter of the ECA and most recently, Derek Thompson,

CEO of ETT (Electrical Training Trust) were remembered during the Chairman’s speech. Chairman, Colin Cherry expressed special thanks to the members and sponsors for attending the event and for maintaining their support throughout the past two years when the dinner had to be postponed on four occasions. Colin spoke of how working conditions changed considerably with the onset of Covid-19 in early 2020 and how a lack of direction from local government compelled the local electrical industry to manage the processes. He also spoke of how members of the ECA have welcomed support from the association since March 2020 with their

regular communication updates and webinars to keep members up to date in challenging times. ECA has since launched a new website and app to enable access to services even when on the move. Sponsors present included: Karen McAvoy, Ireland’s Electrical Magazine, Aaron McKeown, MGA Communication, Mark Wilson, Malone Lighting, Lee McGregor, CEF, Simon McCarthy, Knightsbridge, James Beattie, G4S and Tina Spivack from Edmundson’s. Apologies were sent from ECA President, Dave Lewis as well as CIBSE President, Jonathon Grimshaw and NI Master Plumbers’ Federation President, David Taylor.

WIRELESS TESTING

SMART BUILDINGS ARE WHERE THE FUTURE IS HEADED AND VENTILUX DALI CONNECT IS THE SOLUTION FOR WIRELESS TESTING SYSTEMS… Complete wireless DALI solution

D ali (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is an open protocol intelligent addressable emergency lighting testing solution which allows an installation to be supervised, tested and monitored from a central location in accordance with the latest national standards. It offers the customer the short- term opportunity of recovering the cost of the installation and make considerable cost saving in the long term against the ever-growing maintenance costs, combined with providing confidence and peace of mind that the emergency lighting installation is fully compliant to the testing requirements of the national standards. It negates the necessity of a maintenance engineer to physically/visually check all

Long-term maintenance – Easier maintenance and less risk of confusion on site in the long term. No rewiring – Rewiring is not required for wireless implementation in existing projects or in future extensions. The system works in conjunction with the wired DALI controllers as a mixed system or complete wireless solution. “DALI allows sites to be tested in non-working hours, causing less disruption to the work environment and saving the end-user money.”

connected to a cloud-based server. The Zigbee mesh network has a considerable increase in distance compared to a wired solution. The Zigbee network can range up to 50m within a building environment and 100m in open air. This system is suitable for large or small installations. Key benefits of the new wireless DALI Reduced capital costs – The wireless system doesn’t require any communication cable, additional cable fixtures, additional trunking or any additional connectors, thus effectively reducing the capital investment. Installation costs – Implementation of DALI Wireless drastically reduces the time and cost incurred during installations as there is no requirement for any additional wiring communication bus, attaching fixings or additional drilling. Self-healing – DALI MESH is a self- healing network that routes back to the DALI Control module irrespective of the number of faulty luminaires in the network. Mesh network is far superior to point to point.

emergency luminaires on a regular basis, while also not needing to check emergency luminaires during test periods. DALI allows sites to be tested in non-working hours, causing less disruption to the work environment and saving the end-user money. The Wireless DALI can have up to 128 luminaire connections to each channel running off a Zigbee Mesh Network

MENTORSHIP SCHEME

Gerard McCarthy, Electricians Community Ireland.

A n electrical mentorship scheme aiming to pair up new contractors with more experienced ones is well underway thanks to a passionate team of electricians from the Facebook group, ‘Electricians Community Ireland’. Cork-based electrician, Gerard McCarthy had the idea after his own experience of starting off in the electrical industry a decade ago. Speaking to Ireland’s Electrical Magazine about his plans, Gerard explained that he hopes the scheme will be a “huge asset” to both parties to learn from each other. The mentorship scheme will cover all of Ireland, north and south, and as well as Gerard’s involvement, other electricians have got on-board with the idea too. Administrators of the Facebook group, ‘Electricians Community Ireland’, Stevie Power, Christopher Ruddy, Colin McNally and Stuart Parkinson, who between them have over 90 years’ experience, will all be involved in the scheme alongside Gerard. “The guys were excellent and got stuck in straight away,” Gerard explained, “and we started taking names of those looking to get involved. There was a great response from both newly registered contractors and more experienced guys willing to share their wealth of knowledge, with the goal of pairing up newer contractors with the older wiser heads.” ELECTRICAL MENTORSHIP SCHEME SPARKS INTEREST FROM NEW AND MORE EXPERIENCED ELECTRICIANS... Electrical mentorship scheme

Gerard, owner of GMC Electrical, felt that the online platform was the best place to get the scheme up and running. When starting out, he used the group to seek advice on various things from accountants to regulations and he found the ‘Electricians Community Ireland’ group very helpful. “All contractors have to start somewhere, and from experience, more experienced contractors, are always willing to help out and give advice where possible. A mistake maybe an older contractor made when he was starting out, if they can avoid that happening to another contractor then that is a win straight away,” Gerard added. He is hoping that more people will

register their interest in the scheme to share experiences and help others. For anyone who wants to get involved, further information is available on the ‘Electricians Community Ireland’ Facebook page which you need to join. You can then message the page to get in touch with one of the admin team to get involved. Gerard hopes to have the programme up and running very soon and is currently in the process of matching those who have already shown interest. Further information can be found on the Facebook group ‘Electricians Community Ireland’ or by contacting Gerard on: +353 (0)87 940 5477.

AMBITIOUS PLANS FOR THE CREATION OF 200 JOBS AT NEW EI ELECTRONICS GROUP HEADQUARTERS... Taoiseach Micheál Martin unveils new Ei Electronics Group headquarters in Shannon

L ast month, Ei Electronics welcomed Taoiseach Micheál Martin to officially open its state-of-the-art new group headquarters on its existing campus. Plans to hire 200 additional staff members over the coming year at the Shannon facility were also revealed.

The new building comprises a 10,000m² facility and includes significant additional manufacturing capacity, research and development and office space. The expansion underpins a strategy of maintaining 100% of manufacturing in Shannon, in addition

to the co-location of other key functions on a single site. The new development consists of a 3-storey building adjoining its existing headquarters. With a turnover in 2021 of approximately €320m, and 1,100 employees worldwide, Ei Electronics commands a leadership position globally as a manufacturer of residential fire and gas detection products. The company is 100% Irish-owned and has been operating for over 55 years. Over 30 years ago it became a fully-fledged Irish company after a management buy-out from General Electric in 1988. Official opening Speaking at the opening of the Ei Electronics campus in Shannon on Friday, 4 March, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said: “I am pleased to be here to witness

first-hand the continued expansion of Ei Electronics, one of Ireland’s largest and most successful manufacturing and electronic companies. For over five decades the company has been a remarkable contribution to Shannon and the mid-west region and its ambitious plans for future growth and job creation are very welcome.” An Taoiseach continued: “Ei Electronics is an outstanding Irish-owned company creating solutions with a global reach and I commend Michael and his team on today’s milestone announcement.” CEO of Ei Electronics, Michael Guinee added: “We are delighted to welcome An Taoiseach for what is another milestone in Ei’s long history. Today, we embark on our next phase of growth on the site in Shannon which we have occupied for over 55 years. This building is a testament to the dedication of very many people over several decades, built on a strong culture of loyalty, respect, commitment and long service.” The company’s Irish sales operation has grown steadily in recent years, occupying a leadership position and the supplier of choice for installers and wholesalers alike.

Ireland Country Manager, Tom Meehan explained: “The new state-of-the-art facility means a bright future for our loyal Irish customer base. The additional manufacturing capacity will position our Irish sales and support team to offer Irish customers best-in-class support and service into the future. In line with our Sustainability strategy, the building is also one of the first Near Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) in Shannon.” Global position Ei ranks as one of Ireland’s largest indigenous manufacturing and exporting electronics companies. It occupies a 32,000m² campus in Shannon, where all business functions are headquartered, R&D, Sales and Marketing, Manufacturing, Customer Service and Finance and Admin. With customers in over 30 countries worldwide, Ei employs an additional 100 people in its five wholly owned overseas subsidiaries in the UK, Germany, France, the USA and Poland, bringing the total headcount to over 1,100. Over 90% of turnover is accounted for by exports, the primary overseas markets today being

the UK, Germany, USA, Netherlands and Australia. Company growth January 2020 saw the opening of its new UK headquarters in Oswestry, Shropshire. This also coincided with the 30th anniversary of Ei’s UK subsidiary Aico. This came on the back of an expansion of Ei’s German facility in 2019. July 2020 marked the acquisition of Bristol-based company HomeLINK to further expand Ei’s footprint in the Connected Home and IOT arena. A suite of Environmental Sensor solutions developed jointly by Ei and HomeLINK were brought to market in the middle of 2021. Over the years, Ei has added a range of value-added monitoring, management and data extraction software tools to its product suite to enable interconnectivity between devices and local and remote control of complete installations. The most recent Gateway and Remote Inspection product launches mark the transition to the cloud-based management of systems, further increasing ease of management and compliance, and reducing overall cost of ownership.
