Getting To Know The Physiotherapy Center LTD. Team MR. RESEAN REECE, R.P.T. Health &Wellness The Newsletter About Your Health And Caring For Your Body
As I re-introduce myself to the medical realm and people of Cayman, I reflect on my experience and contributions to this Caribbean pearl. Assuming a physiotherapist role here in the Cayman Islands has been quite satisfying. I’ve worked with a wide cross- section of patients, each having his or her unique challenges, experiences and goals. Nonetheless, the common denominators in their rehab, are ensuring that the best is done for them and to facilitate them getting the best out of their recovery. Let me re-iterate our clinic’s slogan: “We take pride in taking care of you, to help you GET BACK TO BETTER AGAIN.” In addition to my in-clinic sessions, I have conducted ergonomic assessments, facilitated physiotherapy home visits, volunteered at sporting competitions and participated in aquatic therapy sessions. I have also had the opportunity to participate in continuing education programs. (P.S. You never stop learning!). I am humbled, as I have not just achievements to bear, but I have benefited immensely from the diverse Caymanian community and culture. I then take this opportunity to express my gratitude for the support that I have received frommy patients, associates, and The Physiotherapy Center family.
Feel free to talk, unwind, laugh and work in my presence. I look forward to continuing my work here and firmly believe there is room for tremendous growth, for both myself and our clinic. At the Physiotherapy Center, we provide the very best service for our community. Have a blessed year! Resean looks forward to meeting you to help you “GET BACK TO BETTER AGAIN.”
Mr. Reece celebrated his birthday this month. The Mangement and staff extends best wishes to Mr. Reece for a successful year! Happy Birthday, Resean!

People frequently have questions about what sciatica is, why it occurs and how to find relief from the intense pain it can cause from the low back down to the feet. If you are suffering from sciatica, it is important to find its root cause. Many people often think an x-ray or expensive MRI is firstneeded tofigureoutwhat iscausingpain.Having a lotof testsdoesn’tmeanyouwillfind its rootcause. Recent studies show that nearly 1 million of MRIs done for sciatica fail to find a treatable cause. With a new imaging technique called magnetic resonance neurography, 69% of the patients were found to have a trapped sciatic nerve deep in the buttock by a muscle called the piriformis. It is known that in about 25% of the general population, the sciatic
nerve pierces through the piriformis muscle and can be susceptible to abnormal pressure and irritation.

Why Does Sciatica Occur? If there are changes in posture, muscle strength or pelvic alignment, the nerve can be compressed which leads to the quite common low back and sciatic nerve pains. The sciatic nerve is the longest and largest nerve in your body. It even reaches down to the foot and therefore, can be irritated anywhere along its path. With sciatica, the consequent ache can be felt anywhere from the base of the spine, the buttocks or the back of the thigh and legs. Even tingling sensations in the toes can be attributed at times to the impingement of the sciatic nerve.

AVOID ACHES & PAINS IN THE GARDEN Common gardening activities, such as digging, planting, weeding, mulching, and rakingcancausestressandstrainonmusclesand joints. This isespecially true for senior citizens and people who are normally sedentary. Different body areas such as the shoulders, neck, back, and knees can be vulnerable to injury during gardening. These tips can help prevent injuries: • Warm up before you garden. A 10 minute brisk walk and stretches for the spine and limbs are good ways to warm up. • Change positions frequently to avoid stiffness or cramping.
• Make use of a garden cart or wheelbarrow to move heavy planting materials or tools. Be sure to keep your back straight while using a wheelbarrow. • Ifkneelingonbothkneescausesdiscomfort inyourback, trykneelingonone and keep the other foot on the ground.
