They are burning up the competition on the volleyball court this season and their latest triumph in Belleville leaves Le Phénix U15 girls with a clear flight path from Prescott-Russell to the provincials in Waterloo in mid-April. Prescott-Russell trounced Kingston in a three-set finals match at the Ontario Volleyball Association’s (OVA) Bugarski Cup Tournament in Belleville over the March 24 weekend. Le Phénix took the U15 girls division title, defeating their opponents in a best-of-three match with scores of 25-21, 11-25, and 16-14. “It’s our first gold medal in two years,” said Head Coach Jean-François Rainville, during a phone interview March 26. Le Phénix has collected silver and bronzeduringthepasttwoyears,including the present season, in OVA-sanctioned tournaments. The gold-medal triumph at the Bugarski Cup earned the team a berth at the three-day OVA Provincial Championships inWaterloo over the April 14 weekend. Le Phénix has played Kingston three times in other tournaments this season before the Bugarski Cup event. Kingston won the first session and Prescott-Russell the following two tournament face-offs with two-set victories. Rainville noted that the key to Le Phénix flying off with the win and a shot at the provincials this time depended on teamwork and playing to their strengths. “They needed to stay focused in the serve, and playing our game,” he said. “Not Kingston’s.” Coach Rainville noted that remains the

A few patches of snow and ice are resisting the coming of spring but that doesn’t matter to local soccer fans. The Rockland United Soccer Club (RUSC)wrapsupitspre-seasonregistration drive at the end of March. The next few weeks will see club directors working out the draft team rosters for all the divisions. The RUSC will also be working on attracting corporate sponsorship to help keep membership rates and other costs down for players. This season the club has several sponsorship options available for small-, medium-, and big business owners who enjoy a good game of soccer and want to share that passion with local youth. The banquet itself is on April 14 at the Clarence Creek Arena. First to sit down for a special end-of-season breakfast/brunch are the Initiation and Atom players from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. NextarethePeeweesandJuvenileteams for their celebration meal together from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Signups for the next season are April 4 and 23, 7 to 9 p.m. at the arena.

Hockey season may be over for most young would-be NHLers, except for some of the playoffs sessions, but there still remain a few important items left on the minor hockey schedule. In Clarence Creek next month it is the Annual Banquet for the Clarence Creek Minor Hockey Association.
