My Legal Assistant Is One of the World’s Best
A LABOR DAY TRIBUTE TO VANESSA GALVEZ
Recently, while I was in a jury trial, a client called us with an emergency. His license had been suspended because of an allegation of a physical or mental disability that would affect his driving. He needed a priority reexamination,
Vanessa was a fresh college graduate when we took her on as part of the team, but even without the years of experience she has today, she was always dedicated to being excellent at what she does. From day one, she’s always had a persistent work ethic and curiosity, allowing her to work and thrive independently.
but the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) didn’t want to give him a hearing date for nearly three months out. That was unacceptable. Imagine your driver's license disappearing for 90 days. That can be devastating to a person’s professional and personal life, even preventing family providers from putting food on the table.
She’s not just capable at handling calls with the DMV or insurance companies — she’s also skilled at understanding the practice of criminal law and being able to answer important client concerns, even if I’m unavailable. Vanessa knows her stuff, and you’ll quickly realize that when you work with her.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t in the office to help our client. As you may know, I can’t really take calls
Best of all, Vanessa is very outgoing and engaging to talk to. I get frequent compliments not just about her knowledge or informativeness, but also about her kindness
during trials because it’s an all-day affair. I don’t have time or space to give my attention to matters outside of the trial, even though the firm continues to assist our current and new clients. So, when a time-sensitive emergency comes up during a jury trial, some firms will be forced to handle new emergencies in a haphazard or temporary manner until the attorney is available again. Luckily, at our firm, we rarely have to worry about that thanks to Vanessa Galvez, my legal assistant. She called and haggled with the DMV until she acquired a new reexamination for him in just two weeks. I have a lot of people to thank for our firm’s success. Each of our employees has earned my deepest thanks for their compassionate commitment to our clients. However, it’s rare that you find someone who truly goes the extra mile in every aspect of their work. That certainly applies to Vanessa.
and understanding. When a client needs an update about how their case is progressing, she can tell them the details of any new discovery updates and extend a patient, compassionate ear toward what they’re going through. It can be a very traumatic or difficult thing to undergo criminal charges, whether they’re DUI-related or not. Vanessa makes her personal understanding of their case known. Thus, I’ve always appreciated how she navigates conversations with our clients in a respectful, thoughtful manner, every time.
Thank you, Vanessa, for everything you do! You help brighten up the office and bring plenty of smiles to our staff and clients’ faces alike —
and your superb knowledge never goes unnoticed. I’m sure all our clients would agree you deserve to take it easy this Labor Day.

How Reading Fiction Can Benefit You SELF-HELP BOOKS CAN’T DO IT ALL
Many CEOs and other successful individuals continually espouse the benefits of regular reading. Many times, leaders read self-help books to improve their leadership skills and become more successful. This is all well and good, but even the most successful people in the world could be missing out on the unique benefits that come specifically from reading fiction. But what are those benefits exactly?
thinking or feeling a certain way, we tend to think or feel that way with them.
Less Stress and Better Sleep When we read fiction specifically, we tend to disengage from the world — and that’s a good thing! Our brains can’t always be functioning at their peak capacity. We need breaks, or else we’ll stress ourselves out and negatively affect other areas of our lives. Stress tends to keep us from sound sleep, but reading fiction before bed engages the imagination, taking us away from the stresses of everyday life before we drift off. More Comfort With Uncertainty Even though many stories (particularly those portrayed in popular movies) have nice happy endings, most people would agree that life sometimes leaves things a little more
open-ended. While this fact might stress out some people, researchers have discovered that fiction readers don’t need “cognitive closure” as much as nonfiction readers. Greater Happiness Even if none of the benefits of fiction interest you, everyone wants to find ways to make themselves happy — and for many, that is reading fiction. According to one survey, 76% of participants said that reading makes them feel good and improves their lives. So, what are you waiting for? Dust off that novel you’ve been meaning to read and crack it open!
Greater Empathy When a psychologist analyzed 86
functioning MRI (fMRI) studies, he found that the same parts of the brain that fire up when reading fictional stories also fire up when we’re seeking to understand the thoughts and feelings of others. That’s because when the characters in the book we’re reading are
IS IT POSSIBLE TO BEAT A DUI?
Yes! Here’s Why
Getting charged with a DUI can be a very scary, isolating experience, especially if you don’t know anyone who's been in a similar situation. However, people can fail sobriety tests all the time, even when sober! But how? Why Sobriety Tests Can Be Faulty People usually fail the field sobriety tests because these tests are used to determine a person’s balance and coordination, so they are actually designed for failure. The officer would be able to find something that looked like impairment if a person continued to do field sobriety tests for long enough or if they performed enough different tests. The field sobriety tests were never designed to be used in the way or with the intensity they are being used now. The rules and
procedures around field sobriety tests have evolved over the past 30 years to make it easier for police officers to make arrests, so something that may have disqualified someone from participating in standardized field sobriety tests 20 years ago has now become perfectly acceptable. It is similar to the telephone game, because as more officers use it and teach other officers, the more diluted it becomes. By the end of the line, the message received has nothing to do with the original scientific research, and even that is questionable in regards to how it applies to field sobriety tests. Is It Really Possible to Beat My DUI? We hear this question a lot, and the answer is yes! We know well-founded legal and scientific defenses to a DUI charge that
allow good defense attorneys to get cases dismissed. Some cases are won pre-trial without even having to go to a jury. Other cases require the jury to hear the testimony of the cops and experts to see that the defendant is not guilty of the crimes charged. Each case is unique, and sometimes a “win” is keeping someone out of county jail when they are facing mandatory jail time. Sometimes a “win” is reducing a charge to keep someone working at their job where a DUI conviction would mean termination and unemployment. Our skilled criminal defense lawyers work with these types of cases every day — please give us a call as soon as you’re in need of advice!

We Will Protect Your Gun Rights in Court
Why You Need a Gun Lawyer in LA County
Gun cases are prevalent in Los Angeles County. These can range from carrying a concealed weapon to using a firearm in furtherance of a crime. There are legal and factual defenses to various gun-related charges, and there are a lot of different laws when it comes to possessing a firearm legally or illegally. These kinds of cases can get complicated very quickly. It is not a simple matter of a person being found with a gun. The courts will ask who owns the gun, what that person’s criminal history is, if there is any affiliation with gangs (this can affect what charges are filed), where the gun is, where the person is, and when they have the gun. These are all very important questions when handling gun-related cases. These cases need to be defended to protect an individual from harsh penalties and potential jail time. Even the most serious of gun-related cases can be defended, and, with the proper representation, a better outcome can be obtained.
At the Law Office of Mark Rosenfeld, we’ve been defending
gun owners for over 20

A Few New Legal Dramas for Your List
Don’t Miss Out on These Gripping Stories! NEW LEGAL DRAMAS FOR YOUR LIST Never face a legal problem alone. Any time legal help is needed, please call my office right away. My office will make sure you get the right attorney and the help you need.
Few places house events with higher stakes than the courtroom. Lawyers, judges, and jury work with (and against) one another, all while the fate of a person’s livelihood hangs in the balance. The courtroom has indeed captured our collective imagination, which is why television dramas about lawyers and courtrooms have been so popular for decades. Even in 2021, that hasn’t changed. So, if you’re a courtroom drama junkie and are looking for your next binge, then check out some of the following titles as we begin the season of new TV shows. ‘For Life’ The verdict isn’t always the end of the story — sometimes it’s the beginning. “For Life” follows a prison inmate wrongfully convicted of a life sentence and his desperate struggle to become a lawyer. He then works toward overturning his case and returning to his family. This ABC show was a huge hit with critics and fans alike and has been greenlighted for a second season. ‘Defending Jacob’ Oaths in the court of law are strong, but are they stronger than the bonds of family? That’s what one former assistant district attorney
will have to answer when one of his son’s classmates is discovered murdered, and many signs point to his son, Jacob, as the killer. This miniseries debuted on Apple TV+ in April 2020 and stars Chris Evans of “Captain America” fame. ‘Perry Mason’ If your taste in story settings is more art deco than postmodern, then you might enjoy this Emmy Award-nominated show from HBO. Set
in 1931, Perry Mason is a top-notch criminal defense attorney, who takes on what could be the biggest case the bustling city of Los Angeles has ever seen. As much a character study as it is a crime drama, the performances in this show may suck you in even more than the story itself. But if none of these seem particularly interesting to you, “Law & Order” is still there to help scratch your crime drama itch.
