NOVEMBER 13 Joy A fter Pain “I f the clouds be full of rain” (Eccl. 11:3). Our troubles will bring us blessings. The clouds will empty themselves before long, and every tender herb will be the gladder for the shower. Our God may drench us with grief, but He will not drown us with wrath; nay, He will re fresh us with mercy. Our Lord’s love letters often come to us in black-edged en velopes. His wagons rumble, but they are loaded with benefits. His rod blossoms with sweet flowers and nourishing fruits. Let us not worry about the clouds, but sing because May flowers are brought to us through April showers. —C harles H addon S purgeon . NOVEMBER 14 How to Get Guidance “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me” (Matt. 11:29). The yoke of Christ is the will of Christ. You remember how Saul of Tarsus said: “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?” How did the answer come ? When the Lord answers that prayer, He does not answer it all at once. If you are seeking to know what the will of the Lord is, He reveals it to you gradually. See how it came to Saul: “Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.” God had a wonderful purpose for converted Saul, but now He gave him only enough light to go into the city, just a few steps. God had prepared a man there to wait for him. And when Saul was willing to take those few steps, then he was ready for more light. . . . ’’But,” you say, “how can I do the will of God unless I know it?” Well, now there are two truths—you must know the will of God in order to do it, and you must be willing to do God’s will before you can know it. And so we read, “If any man will do his will, he shall know.”— E van H . H opkins . NOVEMBER IS The A nointing of the Spirit "The anointing which ye have received of. him abideth” (1 John 2:27). David said, “I shall be anointed with fresh oil.” There are two primary condi tions—obedience (Acts 5:32), and faith (Gal. 3:14). The anointing never comes upon those who live in willful disobedi ence, or upon those who at the moment of presenting their request, say, “I doubt Thee.” It is not an evanescent experience. The anointing abides in us as long as we heed the injunction to abide in Him. . . . Unbelief will hinder the putting forth of His power; want of recognition will hurt and disappoint Him; and willful sin will cause Him to depart in grief. “Keep us in the narrow way; Warn us when we go astray; Plead within us when we pray, Hear us, Holy Spirit.” NOVEMBER 16 Gripped by the Hand of Omnipotence “And he had in his right hand seven stars" (Rev. 1:16). The word “hold” signifies to “hold fast —to grip tightly.” The right hand is the symbol of strength and applied force, and we are therefore to understand by this metaphor that our Lord sustains a personal relationship of the strongest kind toward His servants. We are not left to the caprice of a fickle world, neither are we thrown back upon ourselves, but we are —J. G regory M antle .

course. . . . Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness.” That is the way I want to finish, by God’s grace. But we shall not finish that way unless we have lived that way. —G. C ampbell M organ . NOVEMBER 10 The Christian’s Native Air “Praying always [at all seasons] . . . in the Spirit” (Eph. 6:18). It was Fletcher of Madeley, who, when ever he met a friend, would say: “Do I meet you praying?” The early Christians never met without invoking a benediction, and never parted without a prayer; and to the saints of the Middle Ages each passing incident summoned to intercession—the shadow on the dial, a tolling bell, the flight of a swallow, the setting sun. Sir Thomas Browne, the author of Religio Medici, covenanted with himself “to pray in all places where quietness inviteth; in any house, highway, or street; and to know no street in this city that may not witness that I have not forgotten God my Saviour in it.” All life is to be an unbroken litany of prayer. “Prayer is the Christian’s vital breath, The Christian’s native air, His watchword at the gates of death: He enters heaven by prayer.” —The Dawn. NOVEMBER 11 Chastened as Sons “Blessed is the man whom thou chas- tenest . . . arid teachest him out of thy law” (Psa. 94:12). Something comes to the believer through God’s chastening which comes not other wise. The sweetest form of humility is born in submission to God in trouble. There is an understanding of ourselves and of our own position. There is an in sight into the meaning of God’s “law” and what it requires. There is a revelation as to God Himself, which is found nowhere elsel It gives “rest” (v. 13)—that is, peace—in the days of adversity, and pa tience to wait God’s time in dealing with the evil around. Jehovah will never cast us off, nor forsake His own inheritance. God is our portion, and we are God’s por tion on the earth.—J. E lder C umming . NOVEMBER 12 Silencing the Accuser “Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect?” (Rom. 8:33). Satan knows how to play the role of the accuser, although it ill becomes him; and the citadel of peace has to sustain an as sault, nay, a siege, while all that a man has ever said or done amiss—his slips in duty, his evil tongue, his proud temper, his mur- murings, his insincere devotions, his for malities, his insincerities—are marshaled in horrid, array and launched against him with the taunt: How can such an one as you dare to call himself a child of God? At such* moments of alarm, the believer finds no defense save in the free mercy of the gospel. He must take refuge be neath the divine promise of gratuitous ac quittal through the blood of Jesus. . . . “We have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.” Nothing will stop the accuser’s mouth but the one mighty act of sovereign grace by which God acquits and justifies the sinner. This makes the timid believer bold again; for it arms him with an answer to the adversary. — J. O swald D ykes .
