NOVEMBER 20 Conform ity to Christ

“gripped tightly” by the hand of Omnipo tence. The knowledge of this fact is a source of unutterable consolation to the worker; it is an inspiration to the most difficult service. . . . Then, if there is the impartation of strength, there is also the exercise of vigilance, for our Lord is de scribed as walking “in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks.” . . . Nothing escapes Him. The eyes like a flame of fire penetrate into the innermost recesses. . . He is prepared to meet our need. —F . C. S purr . “The Lord is thy keeper” (Psa. 121:5). How natural it is for a pilgrim to think, first of all, of his feet being kept. He is on a long journey; any injury to a foot makes him helpless. Hence it is a serious thing to stumble, or to “dash thy foot against a stone.” God knows our need and our weakness, and He teaches us to pray. But the day is long (how long it seems on a journey on foot!) and there are dangers by night, perhaps greater than by day. May not our Keeper (blessed, heaven-taught description of God) forget us? May He not slumber at noontide, or sleep by night? Ah! the psalmist knows God. “The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.” —J. E lder C umm ing . NOVEMBER 18 Sin’s D eform ity Removed “Thou art all fair, my love; there is no spot in thee" (Cant. 4:7). These are the Lord’s words concerning His church. He sees her not apart from Himself and as she is in herself. He views her in Himself. It is not the result of her own efforts, nor is it indeed her come liness in any sense of which He speaks, but, “my comeliness, . . . saith the Lord God.” In this position of acceptance, her defor mities of sin are removed. “There is no spot in thee.” She is not only free from defilement, but she is also positively lovely and fair. “Thou art all fair.” Spurgeon says: “Christ Jesus has no quarrel with His spouse. She often wan ders from Him and grieves His Holy Spirit, but He does not allow her faults to affect His love. He sometimes chides, but it is always in the tenderest manner, with the kindest intentions; it is ‘my love’ even then.”— S elected . NOVEMBER 19 Living Like Christ “We know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him" (1 John 3:2). Is the likeness of the Lord Jesus strong in you today? It is of no use trying, as many do, to imitate Christ, unless you have Christ dwelling within. Thus provided, we set out to live the holy life, without which no man shall see the Lord. “He that saith he abideth in him, ought him self also so to walk, even as he walked.” And how did Jesus walk? He walked in .the power and company of God. . . . Yes, thank God, we know that we shall be like Him, but have we ever had a real desperate soul-hunger to be like Him here on earth ? Are you like Him when sitting at meat? Are you like Him when in the midst of home worries? Are you more impressed by the presence of God than by the presence of anybody else? Are you impressed by the thought that God is ? Iam certain that we are defective in that profound reverence for.God.—H. B. M acartney . . .. .. .. .. ... NOVEMBER 17 God’s V igilance

“My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you" (Gal. 4:19). That Christ may be formed—in His ex quisite beauty; That Christ may be seen—with His won derful life Portrayed, day by day, in the presence of duty— Revealed, hour by hour, in life’s strain, stress, and strife 1 That Christ may be formed! He strongly desires it! Waits now His own life, in its fullness to show; A weary world needs it—most truly re quires it— Christ formed and revealed in His chil dren below. —J. D anson S m ith . NOVEMBER 21 The Sin That Cannot Be Cleansed “The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). We cannot be cleansed from the sin we do not confess. We cannot be cleansed from the sin we excuse. We cannot be cleansed from the sin to which we are se cretly resolved to cling. There is no such thing as negotiation, transaction, or com promise possible in the relations of God and man. We may take the gospel or leave it, but we cannot bargain about it. We may be cleansed from all sin, or from none, but not from some on condition of retaining others. Renounce with all your heart everything secret and insincere. Let there be hidden nothing in your life, no prevari cations, no reserves. Insincerity, the dark atmosphere in which so many souls live, is, in its turn, one of the forms of sin from which the blood of Christ cleanses; and as we confess it, and disown it, and bring it to the cleansing blood, it also loses its power. This is the way in which all the wealth of the gospel becomes ours. —S elected . NOVEMBER 22 The D iscipline of the Cross “And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” (Phil. 2:8). The cross of Christ is the symbol both of defeat and of triumph. The Son of man, the Gospels tell us, was betrayed, arrested, tried, crucified. The Lamb slain from the foundation of the world was nailed to the accursed tree. The story of Christ’s pas sion ends in apparent defeat . . . . But the defeat is only one side of the paradox which makes the side of His triumph more real and more glorious. He died in order that He might live. He laid down His life that He might take it up again and that we might receive from Him the life which is life indeed.. . . Out of His sufferings issues our salvation. Out of His death comes our life. In the night of His crucifixion is born the bright day of our fondest hopes and our abiding joys. —T homas H. L einbach . NOVEMBER 23 W ithout Blemish “Perfect and entire, wanting nothing” (Jas. 1:4). This is the will of God, and it is a con dition of things as far beyond purity of heart as manhood is beyond childhood. We reach it by growth in Christ, and by in struction and discipline as we lie in the gracious hand of God. I often think in this connection of the progress of plate glass
