Freedom in Captivity
Ned Wildgoose Bulloch (Year 13)
As the disease spread, we entered lockdown. I usually like to reside Behind the walls that can Turn me into a military compound; My searching eyes beam out at night, But aside from the security light, No signals leak out or in. It can be beautiful in a Blackout zone. No phone ringing, bringing troubles To sight. I can build a paradise within My mind, An ordered structure Founded on a base of skin and bone, But grounded upon freedom. The freedom here is The creativity Of living inside A smallish space, Yet living outside of time. No-one asks me to meet them today; They never did, anyway. When we’re all jailed in our houses, I feel at home. And I wonder how the others would be,
Unused to feeling alone. But I don’t know because I don’t ask And they don’t tell me.
