DR TALBOT' Lost Ten Tribes Q. Is there any truth to the theory advanced hy many sincere people today that America is mostly popu lated by descendants of the Biblical “ Lost Ten Tribes” and that we are a part of Israel today, in contrast with Judah, which is represented by the Jewish people? A. There is not the slightest Scrip tural basis for these views. They are simply one of the fables men tioned in II Tim. 4:4: “ And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” This fantastic misinterpre tation of the Word of God, called British-Israelism, or Anglo-Israel- ism, originated in the mind of a Richard Brothers, who in 1794 wrote a book entitled “ Revealed Knowledge” in which he declared that he was a descendant of David and that he would be revealed as “ Prince of the Hebrews.” Although his prediction was not fulfilled, he put out another book entitled, “ Cor rect Account of the Invasion of Eng land by the Saxons, showing the English nation to be Descendants of the Lost Ten Tribes.” These and other writings by Brothers con tained all the basic teachings of this system and later writers have de veloped these views, dislodging the Jews from their rightful place in the prophetic Scriptures and claiming for the British nation all the prom ises God gave to the Hebrew nation. W e cannot now go into all then- absurd claims. I have written at length in regard to this matter in a b o o k l e t , “What’s Wrong with Anglo-Israelism?” Recently in an Anglo-Israel publication I read this s t a t em e n t : ‘ ‘Acknowledgment of Israel’s identity, of our sublime privileges and o b l i g a t i o n s (as British-Israelites) of the eternal
commission given us of the Father and Son is our only hope.” No won der D. M. Panton correctly stated that British-Israelism was an un conscious betrayal of the Gospel. Our hope of salvation is through the Lord Jesus Christ, and it is a per sonal, •not a national, salvation: “ Not of blood (either American or British) . . . but of God” (John 1:13). 666 Q. What is the significance of the number 666 in Revelation 13:18? Is it the number of anyone living today? A. The verse explains itself: “ It is the number of a man.” Since seven is the perfect number and the num ber of deity, this number 666 falls short and indicates that in spite of all the claims the antichrist will make that he is only a man. The antichrist will not be manifested until the church is raptured; if he is in the world today, he has not been revealed, as such. No truly born-again believer will see him when he arises, for we shall be with the Lord. Modernist Teaching Q. Do you not think it is unchris tian to be forever finding fault with the so-called modernists? Many of them are doing much good in the world and living exemplary lives. A. There is a difference between fault-finding and earnestly con tending for “ the faith once for all delivered unto the saints” (Jude 3). Certainly we must be kind, holding the truth in love. But we must not fail to warn men to flee from the wrath to come. Perhaps the follow ing outline facts will suffice to show why we feel impelled to point out the unbelief in the so-called mod ernistic camp; yet let it be remem
bered that these false teachings are not modem. They were being taught when our Lord was here upon earth. 1. This school of theology teaches that the Bible contains the Word, but is not the infallible, verbally inspired, eternal Word of God. 2. It robs our Lord Jesus of His eternal deity, seeking to destroy all faith in His virgin birth, His mir acles, His bodily resurrection, and His coming again. 3. It denies the efficacy of Cal vary’s Cross, substituting man’s own efforts — self-righteousness, as a means of salvation. Good works are the fruit of salvation but never the means. “ By grace are ye saved through faith; not of works, lest any man should boast’ (Eph. 1:8). These are only a few of the dead ly pulpits of our land today. These men would be more honest if they would come out in the open and take their stand instead of using the pulpit as a screen. Organic Evolution Q. Do you believe in the theory of organic evolution as the explanation of the origin of us all? A. I certainly do not. I believe the Bible account of creation in every detail. I am glad, my friend, that you said theory of evolution, for in this you are much more candid than are many others who teach evolu tion as if it were a fact that had been proven in the laboratory. It is a wild, unscientific, fantastic guess, theory, hypothesis that requires as much credulity on the part of peo ple to believe it as it would to be lieve the old Roman and Grecian myths. I prefer the truth of God’s Word to the suppositions of those who call themselves intellectuals.
