ZPT Spotlight: Debbie Ayers, Massage Therapist ZPT The Newsletter About Your Health And Caring For Your Body May 2018

Zionsville Physical Therapy has always been blessed by Debbie Ayers. She started working as a receptionist and PT Aide in 2000, and became certified as a massage therapist in 2001. She has taken additional coursework in Reflexology, Craniosacral Therapy, and specific electrical stimulation modalities to enhance her skills for relieving pain and tension. Her career has grown as she nowworks at two locations as amassage therapist, but we always claim Debbie as one of our own. Her kindness and expertise make her uniquely gifted. No wonder she has several loyal customers! Massage therapy is an additional service offered at ZPT, by calling Debbie directly for an appointment. The benefits of massage include: reducing stress and tension, improving circulation, relieving muscle aches and pain, strengthening the immune system, enhancing and expediting healing, improving wellbeing, and complimenting post-operative rehabilitation. Now, some questions for Debbie! Q: Why did you become interested in Massage Therapy? A: I have been interested in a holistic approach to health since my early 20’s. Then, I would enjoy giving massages to family and friends. One day someone suggested that I do massage professionally. It clicked! Q: What do you like best about providing massage for clients? A: I love helping people to get better and to maintain their health. Q: Favorite food? A: Green Chile Burritos Q: Tell us a little about your family. A: My husband,Tim, is a wonderful cook. My daughters Jamie and Megan have followed in his footsteps, so I am the lucky recipient of many delicious meals! (editor’s side note: both Jamie and Megan worked for ZPT back in their high school days, before they graduated from ZCHS in 2006 and 2009, respectively) Q: What hobbies or special interests do you have? A: I enjoy bike riding and listening to music. Taking bike

rides and being in the country is my form of freedom. Q: What is something about you that most people do not know? A: I completed the RAIN ride, a 1-day bike ride across Indiana, starting in Terre Haute and ending in Richmond. Congratulations on the amazing biking accomplishment, Debbie. And furthermore, congratulations on being the longest survivingmember of the ZPT team! For those of you who want to gain the benefits of massage therapy, stop in and pick up one of Debbie's flyers, or call the ZPT office at 317.873.2033 so that we can provide the information to schedule directly. You will thank yourself for the little piece of heaven she provides.

greening trees and the lure of planting herbs and flowers in containers around the outside of our home. Our big family event is coming up on Mother’s Day weekend, as my son, Aaron, is marrying Genevieve, and we travel to Vancouver, Washington, to be part of the celebration. Aaron has lived in Portland, Oregon, since his graduation from University of Oregon two years ago. His job as a project coordinator for an amazing custom home builder keeps him busy using his architecture training, spreadsheet organization and his great people skills. I am so very proud of him making his home and creating his new family in nearby Vancouver. Genevieve and her little daughter, Avary, have captured our hearts and we look forward to joining our families. God’s blessings. For Mother’s Day I like to pause and appreciate my mom, who has always been my biggest encourager over the years, and my sons’ best fan for their sports and music endeavors. Some of you know Mom, and realize what a gem she is, and I can’t help but get emotional when I think of all we have been through together. Thanks, Mom! For some of you, perhaps you have a mom to appreciate, or are missing your mom, or becoming a new mom, or are a busy mom like I used to be, juggling the

seemingly endless May events that occur when you have children in school. I tip my hat to you, and wish you a most wonderful Mother’s Day weekend, taking a moment for yourself, to think, and just be. Since Memorial Day weekend is approaching, we wish you a meaningful time at the end of May, taking time to appreciate the dedication of our troops, and remember those who gave their lives for our freedom. As we get into the summer months (at last!) please consider taking time to assess what you and your family need regarding healthcare. Perhaps this is the best time to call and schedule some time with your physical therapist to get back on track. We welcome you to come in and share your story and your needs.

"This has made a huge difference in my everyday life!" "Icame toZPTwhen Ibeganexperiencingsharppain inmyneckandshoulders. Marissa was able to identify part of my problem as my posture. Once I was aware of that, I realized that the problem is coming frommy positioning while on the computer. Now, I am very aware of this. If I sit at the computer for too long, I stretch my neck and shoulders using “in the chair” stretches. This has made a huge difference in my everyday life. Not only do I feel better, but I am able to work on maintaining that improvement.” - Peg V.

IS YOUR POOR POSTURE CAUSING SHOULDER OR NECK PAIN?

Did you know that your poor posture can contribute to neck and shoulder pain? You’ve probably heard that “sitting is thenewsmoking”regardingsedentaryworkand rest positions becoming a health hazard due to the poor circulation and risk factors involved in lack of physical exerciseandexertion. Now let’s takeupyetanother issue with sitting, or standing, with poor posture. Prolonged sitting with your head forward or looking downward can cause strain to the upper back and neck ligaments of the spine, leading to nerve compression and muscular tension . Rounded shoulders in sitting or standing can lead to decreased flexibility in the shoulders and loss of functions you count on. Acommonshoulderconditionwesee inphysical therapy is called shoulder impingement. Often the rotator cuff

Katie Poisel, DPT, recommends the following screening test: For shoulder pain, you can bring yourpalmofonehandtotheoppositeshoulderand try to raise the elbow up. If you have pain, it could be a sign of impingement, requiring additional follow up with a PT. MarissaWilding,DPT, reports thatusinga lumbar (low back) roll while seated can help stack the spine to improve alignment, decrease strain through neck, and decrease rounding of the shoulders forward that contributes to shoulder impingement.Shealso recommendsmaintaining your good posture while driving, too.

Elaine Morrison, PT, suggests having a friend, co-worker or spouse tell you when they see you slouching to help break the bad-posture habit. Wall standing is an excellent, easy exercise to do for retraining theposturalmuscles toholdyouupright for longerperiodsof time. Because there are several factors that might be affecting the neck, shoulder and upper back, it is quite important to find out exactly what your specific limitations or poor habits are that might be affecting your comfort and strength, and eventually your functions and quality of life. Schedule an appointment with the experts at ZPT, if these issues are ringing a bell for you, and let us help you determine the appropriate plan of care. Taco Seasoning Mix

Here's a healthy, time-saving recipe that can give you more time with family! - Elaine

INGREDIENTS • 2 Tbsp chili powder • 1 Tbsp ground cumin • 2 tsp salt (Himalyan pink salt)

• 1 tsp black pepper • 1 tsp smoked paprika • 1 tsp ground coriander • ½ tsp garlic powder • ½ tsp red pepper flakes

DIRECTIONS Mix all these ingredients together in a small bowl. Store in a glass jar or zip lock bag. Use 2 Tablespoons of this mix with one pound of beef or 2 cups cooked quinoa or lentils, to make tacos. You may add chopped onion, minced garlic and hot sauce to add flavor. We like to use this taco seasoning mix with avocados, tomatoes, green onions, cilantro and fresh lime juice to make an awesome chunky guacamole. Add 1 teaspoon taco seasoning mix per avocado. Take it another step: Use 2 - 3 Tablespoons leftover Guacamole to a drained can or two of tuna for a quick and easy lunch or dinner. If you like this mix, double the recipe and keep it stocked to save prep time.
