He was inducted into the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame in 1975. In 1994, the City of Cornwall renamed the venerable Water Street Arena in his honour. One of Cornwall’s favourite gathering plac- es, the Si Miller Arena was built in 1936 and became the home of many great hockey teams over the years, including the Corn- wall Royals between 1969 and 1976. Mr. Miller is survived by his wife Joan, three children, Jane Gillis, Mark Miller and Patti Lewis-Hoey, and several grandchil- dren. CORNWALL | The City of Cornwall is mourning the loss of one of the commu- nity’s great sports ambassadors. Si Miller, the former director of Parks and Recre- ation with the City of Cornwall, passed away on Saturday. He was 84. “He was a mentor to me and to many other people,” said Christine Lefebvre, the current Division Manager of Parks and Rec- reation, who worked alongside Mr. Miller prior to his retirement. “He played a big part in developing the parks and recreation sys- tem in Cornwall that we all know and enjoy today.” Some of the many accomplishments that were achieved under Miller’s tenure include the development of Guindon Park, Marina 200 and Cornwall’s popular recreational path. He also brokered partnerships with local service clubs to develop the Opti- mist and Legion parks and the Lion’s Club Bandshell in Lamoureux Park, among other things. An avid hockey, lacrosse, softball and baseball player, Mr. Miller served as the City’s Parks and Recreation Director from 1963 until his retirement in 1994. His devotion to sports and the com- munity extended well beyond his job. Mr. Miller actively participated in Cornwall’s mi- nor hockey program, coaching teams from Atom to Juvenile and taking on the role of Director. He also served as Director and President of the Ottawa District Hockey As- sociation, as well as a Director of the Cana- dian Amateur Hockey Association. Mr. Miller’s contribution to sport was rec-

Trillium Distribution Cornwall Inc. has launched an appeal of the Interim Control Bylaw to the Ontario Municipal Board. A hearing date for that matter has yet to be scheduled. On February 18, the City issued orders to comply and stop work orders at the storage tanks site to prevent further work from proceeding and to have the owner and contractor comply with the Interim Control Bylaw. These orders have not been followed and as a result, the City is presently considering further action.

Lacrosse in the middle of winter
FRANCIS RACINE francis.racine@eap.on.ca
CORNWALL | Children will be able to warm up to the exciting sport of lacrosse through an upcoming winter skills pro- gram at the Benson Centre’s indoor field house. The Cornwall Minor Lacrosse Association is offering its annual ‘lacrosse boot camp’ for children ages 5 – 12, which began on February 4. Lead by former Cornwall Celtic player Kyle Pichie, the program is designed to maximize development of the sport and increase player agility. For younger participants, the program serves as a great introduction to the sport. Learning the unique skills and abilities that are required to play lacrosse takes time and practice; so to master them, it’s a great idea
to begin at a young age. Without the proper techniques, a player may find their short- comings can limit their effectiveness and ability to advance in the game. Teaching a strong foundation in the fun- damentals of lacrosse is something the players can take with them for as long as
they play. The program runs on Tuesday evenings from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., from Febru- ary 4 until April 9. In addition, those who register for the summer season during February will have a chance to win 1 of 2 Reebok 10K lacrosse sticks or a free registration!

The free walking program takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the concourse of the Civic Complex and is open to all. Through the program, residents can continue to exercise while escaping the colder, darker winter months and possibly win some prizes. In addition to exercising in
a comfortable venue, the program provides a monitored environment, with Health Centre staff, volunteers and community partners on hand during program times. The Get W.I.T.H. It! walking program encourages everyone to participate, but it is particularly geared toward those who are concerned about their heart health. The program is designated by the University of Ottawa Heart Institute as a Heart Wise Exercise Program. This means that it meets the 6 criteria established by the Heart Institute when it began to create programs for people who are battling heart disease. l’année 2013, lors de la récente cérémonie des prix d’excellence en affaires de la Chambre de commerce, au Complexe civique.
