is, quite unequivocally, no. In a 2022 study, students at Lakehead 6OJWFSTJUZJO5IVOEFS#BZ 0OU DPNQJMFE more than 530 groundhog predictions from 33 different locations. The results showed the groundhogs are about as accurate as flipping a coin. Not exactly the Nostradamus of the animal kingdom. Instead, the annual coaxing of a ground- hog from his hole in the dirt can be chalked up to tradition. More than 300 years ago, when German Christians arrived in what later became the state of Pennsylvania, they brought with them a tradition of predicting the coming end of winter based on a sunny or cloudy day on Candlemas (a Christian celebration of Jesus’s presentation to the temple of Jerusalem, often celebrated 40 days after the birth of Christ which falls on February 2). The timing of this event often coincided with the waking of hibernating animals, marking the coming of spring. Back then the Candlemas tradition was gussied up with the use of different hiber- nating mammals such as badgers, bears
or foxes as weather prophets. Though no studies could be found to prove it definiti- vely, it’s unlikely the other mammals were any more meteorologically savvy than their groundhog counterparts. From Pennsylvania the tradition spread across North America. The first official recorded Groundhog Day on the continent is considered to be in Punxsutawney, Penn- sylvania, in 1887. So, if the marmots can’t predict the weather, who can? The Farmer’s Almanac uses mathematical and astronomical models to predict long-term weather patterns, claiming to be accurate up to 85 per cent of the time. This year the Almanac is predicting a “lion-like” end to winter, pushing snow storms and rain into late March. Everyone will have to wait until February 2 to see how that prediction will stand up to the weather wisdom of the great woodchucks, Willy, Sam and Fred. Otherwise, just check the Weather Network.

visant à recueillir des articles de cadeaux appropriés pour les enfants des familles dans le besoin de la région. L’agence de services sociaux à but non lucratif travaille en partenariat avec des entreprises locales pour mettre en place des sites de dons de cadeaux. La campagne, qui en était à sa 31e année d’existence, a permis de recueillir des cadeaux adaptés à une grande variété de groupes d’âge, afin d’offrir un cadeau de Noël à 682 enfants et jeunes de la région de Prescott-Russell. La campagne comprenait également la troisième course annuelle du défi des lutins de Noël Valoris, organisée par la Fondation Valoris. Plus de 140 personnes ont participé à l’événement et 20 entreprises ont fait des dons. La course Challenge 2022 a permis de récolter plus de 38 000 $ pour aider à soutenir la campagne des lutins de Noël ainsi que d’autres programmes destinés aux enfants et aux jeunes.

What should have been a four-point wee- kend for Rockland ended with Nepean and Cornwall, both below Rockland in the table going into the weekend, taking points off the struggling Nats. Nepean visited the Rockland Arena on Friday, January 27, to start off the weekend and took the game into their hands off the drop, scoring just 1:07 into the first period. Nats captain Yanic Crête brought the score level early in the second, only to have Nepean pull ahead again after three minutes. The third period saw the Raiders extend their lead with another two goals, one on a powerplay. Bradley Leblanc knocked one in for the Nats around the midway point of the period, but it wasn’t enough to keep Rockland from dropping points and the final score stood at 4-2 for the Raiders. Sunday, the Nats faced off against the Cornwall Colts, a team they defeated two of their three past games this season. A scoreless first period led to two goals in the second, one for Cornwall followed by one from Crête, making for a 1-1 scoreline that would hold through regular time. Cornwall, however, would take the game with an early first overtime goal, pushing
the Colts ahead of the Nats in the Yzerman division. The Nats will get a chance at redemption with the Colts returning to Rockland at the end of the week, Friday, February 3. The following Sunday they will head out of town to take on a strong Carleton Place Canadians side.

When a person who has fallen through the ice is able to get out, they should crawl back onto the ice, and then continue to crawl, with the stomach on the surface of the ice, towards the shore. Do not stand up. Staying flat on the ice and crawling helps to keep a person’s weight distributed evenly. When trying to rescue someone who has gone through the ice, the safest way to do so is from the shore. Call for help first, and then determine if trained professionals will be able to arrive soon. Check if it is possible to reach the person using a long pole or branch. If possible, lie down and extend the pole to the person. If it may be necessary to go on to the ice, wear a personal floatation device and carry a long pole or branch. When near the break, get down flat on the ice to distribute weight evenly and crawl towards the hole. Tell the person to kick up as pulled out of the water. When the person rescued is brought back safe to the shore, call for help. The OPP reminds snowmobilers and ice fishers to be safe and measure ice thickness before going out on the Ottawa River or one of the other local bodies of water A minimum of 10 centimetres of ice is necessary for ice fishing, walking, or skiing while 12 centimetres is required for a snowmobile or ATV, 20 to 30 centimetres for a small motor vehicle and 30 to 40 centimetres for a medium-sized truck. Many factors can affect the thickness of ice surfaces, including the type, depth, and size of the body of water, local currents, the presence of any chemicals in the water, fluctuations in water levels, air temperature, shock waves from vehicles travelling on ice, and any logs, rocks or docks located along the shore that may be absorbing heat from the sun. The colour of ice is an indication of its strength. Clear blue ice is strongest. White opaque ice is half as strong as blue ice. It is formed by wet snow freezing on the ice. Grey ice is unsafe as it indicates the presence of water in the ice. If alone and in trouble on ice, the first thing a person should do is call for help. La Compagnie d'édition André Paquette Inc., éditeur de journaux communautaires bilingues à Hawkesbury (Tribune-Express, Le Carillon), Lachute (L'Argenteuil), Rockland (Vision) et Embrun (Reflet-News) recherche les services d'un JOURNALISTE-RÉDACTEUR Fonctions : • Rédiger des articles sur une variété de sujets, y compris des sujets découlant de réunions municipales, d'événements communautaires, de sports, d'arts, etc. • Travailler dans une salle de rédaction composée de journalistes, en relisant les articles et en élaborant des plans pour chaque journal hebdomadaire. • Prendre des photos et enregistrer des vidéos • Mettre en page le journal à l'aide d'InDesign • Préparer des articles pour le site web et l'application mobile • Doit posséder véhicule et permis de conduire valide Qualifications : • Formation en journalisme ou dans un domaine pertinent ; ou expérience pertinente. • Bilingue : capacité à communiquer en anglais et en français ; la capacité à bien écrire dans les deux langues sera considérée comme un atout important.
