GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca Voyageurs enjoy winning season The Voyageurs Midget AA team came close to a title in the Cabernet Cup Cham- pionships in Toronto, March 6 to 9.
Several members of the team did make their names known in the separate skills competitions, with Michael Lenhart winning the goaltending event after stopping 14 of 15 shots against him in the net. Darius Mamianskum, Nelson Weapi- nicappo, and Jayden Baptiste won their shooting competitions, and Ryan Apsley pulled off third place in the fastest skater competition. The Voyageurs AA midget squad almost won the second tour- nament round of the series with two shu- tout wins and a come- from-behind rally in the finals, but they ended up losing the last match 3-2. Last game of the March schedule for the Midgets AA is March 24 in Prescott against the SG Rangers. On the local side, one of the CIHA’s two mixed teams drawn from the pool of var- sity-level and other ranks of players at the academy took first place, on March 1st, in the Rockland District High School Invitational Tournament. The CIHA beat the RDHS and Russell teams during the one-day event at the Cla- rence Creek Arena.
As the March portion of their season winds down, one of the two midget squads at the hockey academy celebrate their latest triumph. The Voyageurs White midget team of the Canadian International Hockey Academy (CIHA) won the 2017 Academy Division Championship title, after they and the CIHA Green team squared off against the Ontario Hockey Association U17 and U18 squads in a six-game tournament, from March 9 to 17. blessed the Voyageurs White squad as they fi- nished the St. Patrick’s Day weekend with a fi- nal game record of four wins and two losses, out of the series.
2017 may be the year for the first gra- duate of Rockland’s hockey academy to get on the NHL draft list. Gabriel Vilardi, an alumnus of the Canadian International Hockey Acade- my (CIHA), is getting attention in NHL circles. Vilardi was drafted second overall in the 2015 Ontario Hockey League players pick. Since then he has been named the OHL Player of the Week and also CHL Player of the Week in the Canadian Hoc- key League after he finished with a nine- point scoring and assist record over a three-game session. He is now ranked number two on the Windsor Spitfires’ roster with 58 points over 43 games and
top shooter for the team with 28 goals. Vilardi’s name is getting press coverage on NHL.com, in The Hockey News, and on Sportsnet and TSN. NHL Central Scou- ting has him ranked third among North American skaters for a potential draft choice. A number of fantasy player draft simulations have put him among the top five potentials for the 2017 NHL draft. The question now is whether his name shows up on the list of the real thing. Windsor gets to host this year’s OHL Memorial Cup, which means an auto- matic entry for the Spitfires in the May tournament. The series will be another showcase session for Vilardi for any NHL scouts attending in the audience.
Two of the games for the entire series between the four teams finished with over- time play, and several games came down to matter of a single goal deciding the outcome. Head Coach André Savage guided the Voyageurs through a balanced scoring attack combined with a stingy defence through the series. CIHA goaltenders Ethan Hunt and Julien Cholette blocked 95 per cent of all the shots fired against them and managed two shu- touts during the series.
