Anyone who receives a similar call should phone the Ottawa Police Service at 613-236-1222, ext. 7300, or their local police station, or the CrimeStoppers confidential tips line at 1-800-222-8477. The phony inspector scam is in operation again in Eastern Ontario. Police in Lanark County have received calls about individuals claiming to be furnace inspectors from the Ontario Power Authority (OPA).They are try- ing to get victims to agree to furnace and hot water heater inspections.The OPA does not do door-to-door or phone solicitations for furnace or hot water heater inspections, and does not hire outside personnel to do them. Anyone approached by these phony inspectors should ask to see one or more pieces of proper identification and alsomake a note of the I.D. details. They should not allow them to enter the premises or agree to any pressure demands to sign a contract agreeing to an inspection until their creden- tials are checked out. If the person persists, they should hang up or shut the door and call police. A phone scam involving bogus billing for electricity is making the rounds. Police have a report of a person called by some- one claiming to represent Ottawa Hydro and saying there was a problem with the victim’s power bill. The caller hinted that failure to clear up the bill would result in power cut-off. Reports from the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre indicate this scam is in operation in other provinces also. Victims are pres- sured into buying a “Pay Power Money Pack Reload Card”, which is supposed to be a prepaid VISA or other credit card that will put the money to an account provided by the scam artist. Police warn against providing any finan- cial or personal I.D. information to anyone over the phone or in person. They should hang up and report these calls to the police.

Someone is going around claiming to represent the Ottawa Police Service and soliciting funds or other in-kind support for a phony ice fishing derby. The depart- ment’s organized fraud unit has already had one report of someone targeted through a phone call asking for money on behalf of the Ottawa Police Service. The caller said the money is for an ice fishing derby to help mentally-challenged children and asked for credit-card payment of the donation. The Ottawa Police Service

La Police provinciale de l’Ontario (PPO), détachement de Russell, demande l’aide du public afin de trouver le ou les responsables d’un vol au commerce Tigre Géant de Casselman. Le 18 février, une plateforme demétal destinéeà lamanutentiondemarchandise a été volée durant la nuit. Toute personne détenant des renseignements est priée de joindre l’agent Pierre-Etienne Campeau au 613-443-4499. Une entrée par effraction a été perpétrée, le 21 février, au terrain de camping Kittawa, à Limoges. À cet endroit, une quinzaine de roulottes ont été la cible d’entrées par effraction. Des articles ont été volés et d’autres ont été endommagés. Les incidents se seraient produits à différents endroits et à différentes dates. Toute personne détenant des renseignements est priée de joindre l’agent Sylvain Lacroix au 613-443-4499. Le 17 février, une entrée par effraction a été commise dans une résidence du chemin Limoges, à Limoges. Durant l’absence des propriétaires, un ou des suspects se sont introduits dans la résidence et ont saccagé les lieux. Les suspects sont repartis avec une somme indéterminée d’argent ainsi que des bijoux. Les gens peuvent communiquer des renseignements sur cet incident à la PPO en composant le 613-443-4499. Unemotoneigeminiature Bombardier Mini Z, année 2001, a été volée sur le terrain d’une résidence de la rue Albert à Rockland. Lamotoneige est de couleur noir et jaune.
