Why I’m Grateful for My Dad and My Husband A Father’s Influence

A s my parents’ middle child, I found I could “hide” from family responsibilities on occasion. But when it came to home renovations, no one was forgotten. Growing up with a dad who was a bit of a renaissance man meant getting hands-on experience with home improvement projects. Our 1920s house required some updating, and we would go from room to room and find ways to improve that particular space. Throughout our home’s cosmetic renaissance, we learned to place and remove wallpaper, paint, tile, and repair plaster. My dad, known as Papa to his grandkids, spearheaded our family’s renovation operations. As a surgeon, my dad’s renovations were very well- planned and well-executed, from initial planning to cleanup, much like he would approach a tumor removal process in the OR, I suppose. He never shied away from digging into home renovations or developments. I have always appreciated his independent steadiness as a daughter. His steadiness allowed each of us to experience life’s journeys on our own accord, always knowing that he would be there with a strong hand to catch us if we fell. (Thanks, Dad!) I feel blessed to be able to carry on one of my dad’s summertime traditions of growing a garden. It was filled with just about every kind of produce you could imagine, including zucchini, carrots, radishes, corn, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Since my husband, Jolon, and I have become parents, we’ve taught our children how to cultivate our modest garden. We begin each spring by planning out our garden architecture, shopping for plants together, and getting our fingers dirty with the planting. We spend the rest of the summer reaping the delicious benefits of our teamwork! Jolon and I have always been teammates when it comes to parenting our two kids. Because we are both professionals, we have to work hard at coordinating family

time. Before our kids were of school age, we would split our work days in half. We were very blessed to be in circumstances during this time that allowed for such freedom. While I was seeing patients in the morning, Jolon was home with our kids, and then we would switch. The next day, we would flip our shifts. Jolon embodies the modern father: He shares in tackling daily household tasks and manages after-school schedules. I love that he does this readily and in his own “dad” way. If I find myself away on a business trip and someone asks if he is babysitting for the weekend, he will readily respond, “Nope, I get to be Dad.” I feel incredibly blessed to have my dad and Jolon in my family. My children are being raised with strong and loving male role models. Dad, ever the logical and wise man, provides my kids with calm and honest support. (Of course, he can be quite the jokester, too!) Meanwhile, Jolon perfectly straddles the line between a fun dad and a firm dad. I’m so thankful for both of these men and what they bring to our family’s table.

I hope you and your family have a wonderful Father’s Day!

God bless,

–Dr. Jessica Sabo

Good Boys of Antiquity

Dogs in Ancient Legend

Tuiren the Wolfhound In Irish folklore, Tuiren was a beautiful woman to be wed to Iollan Eachtach, but this love made Iollan’s faery sweetheart jealous. In an attempt to ruin the young woman’s wedding, the faery turns Tuiren into a hound and gives her to Fergus Fionnliath, a renowned dog-hater. This cruel act backfires when the Irish wolfhound wins over Fergus, teaching him to love not just her but all dogs too. In fact, the man is crestfallen when his hound is revealed to be a human. Tuiren’s nephew, the hero Fionn, cheers Fergus up with a new puppy!

Far before humans had written histories, we had dogs. From hunting and shepherding to playing and relaxing, our early ancestors had canine companions by their side, and their appreciation shows. As storytelling developed around the world, our four-legged friends became important characters. Here are a few ancient legends for the historical dog lover.

Yudhishthira’s Stray The Indian epic “Mahabharata” is thought to date back to the eighth or ninth century B.C. and tells the story of two warring families. Toward the end of the tale, prince Yudhishthira and his family begin to ascend the Himalayas to reach heaven, and a stray dog joins them on their journey. One by one, Yudhishthira’s companions fall, until only the prince and his furry friend remain. When the god Indra finally appears to offer Yudhishthira passage into heaven, he brings bad news: The dog cannot come with him. But Yudhishthira refuses to abandon his dog, explaining that he could never leave such a loyal, steadfast companion. Anyone who’s turned down a great apartment offer because they don’t allow pets can relate.

Tarascan Spirit Dogs Many Mesoamerican cultures featured dogs prominently in their myths and legends, especially in regard to the afterlife. One of the most notable of these comes from the Tarascan state, an empire that rivaled the Aztecs. The Tarascans believed canine spirits would search out the souls of lost humans and guide them safely out of the mortal world. Leave it to dogs to create ghost stories with happy endings.

What Are My Options After a Sleep Apnea Diagnosis? Quarterbacking Your Care

Living with obstructive sleep apnea can leave you feeling restless at night and exhausted during the day. Thankfully, researchers have developed many treatment options for people of varying ages and levels of sleep apnea. As you consider which treatments may be best for you, one of the most important components to success is to have a quarterback helping you through your journey. At Highland Springs Dental Care, Dr. Jessica Sabo readily jumps into this role for patients, guiding them through treatment options and creating an effective plan for their care. As the following treatment plans outline, there are many components to sleep apnea care that your quarterback can help you consider. CPAP Machines A continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine is considered the gold standard in sleep apnea care. These machines consistently blow a patient’s airway open through air pressure deposited through a mask.

We will always encourage this treatment option, but for the treatment to work, users must consistently wear their masks while they sleep. Oral Appliances and Orthodontic Options Dental experts will frequently alert patients to signs and symptoms of sleep apnea in their mouth, but their expertise can do more than just identify possible red flags. Dentists can fit patients with oral appliances to treat sleep apnea. These devices help to keep the mandible from falling back into the airway during sleep. During certain stages of development, orthodontists may help to permanently affect the growth of airways by expanding the palate and increasing the garage space for the tongue. Surgery and Therapies At any age, surgery and therapies are viable options for treating sleep apnea. Both treatments involve equipping the body with the tools it needs to breathe properly and opening the airway. Ear, nose, and throat operations and mouth surgeries can reshape and realign your mouth and airway, while oral myofunctional therapies can train patients on proper tongue placement and breathing techniques. Both methods have shown significant improvement for children and adults with obstructive sleep apnea. You deserve an expert quarterbacking your care and treatment plans for a restful sleep each night. Balance Your Mouth’s Acid Levels for a Healthier Smile

Quite often, sugar is branded as public enemy No. 1 against your oral health. While sugar does fan the flames of oral diseases, acid may play an even bigger role in your mouth’s hygiene according to researchers. Acid directly erodes your tooth enamel, which is a protective shell that cannot be naturally replenished once it’s depleted. The bacteria that cause cavities, like Streptococcus mutans, love to live in acidic environments too! So, if you are consuming lots of acidic foods and drinks, the number of bacteria increases, and they excrete an acid that, again, erodes the teeth. This erosion can result in tooth sensitivity, greater risk for cavities, discoloration, and in severe cases, tooth loss. The American Dental Association cites sugary and carbonated beverages, such as sodas, energy drinks, and lemonades as the biggest culprits of acidic erosion. So, how do we neutralize this acid? Baking soda is a great tool that most of us have in our fridge or freezer. Brushing with baking soda can help this process, once you get used to the salty taste. A tastier alternative that travels a bit better during your lunch hour are mints containing the natural sweetener called xylitol. While xylitol won’t directly prevent decay, it will reduce the acid levels in your mouth, thus decreasing the bacteria that cause cavities. In addition to regular cleanings and xylitol, it’s vital to think about what you eat in terms of exposure. For instance, if I were to walk from my house to my car, I wouldn’t get sunburned. But if I were to walk around outside all afternoon, I’d get fried! Our “time in the sun” or time with acid in our mouths will determine the level of damage. So, if you must have your root beer, drink it quickly instead of sipping on it all day! What passes through your mouth on a daily basis determines your level of oral health. Learn additional dental hygiene tips and how the experts at Highland Springs Dental Care can help you and your family by calling 951.769.1616. Sudoku (Looking for sources of this handy ingredient? Xylitol is relatively common and can often be found in various gums and mints. Dr. Sabo’s personal favorite is Zellies!)

Travel-Sized Fitness Equipment

That Good Burn Fitness Equipment You Can Take With You While You Travel

Traveling is one of the best ways to stretch your comfort zone and make new memories — if only your fitness routine didn’t have to suffer for it. However, there are ways to feel a good burn, no matter where you travel. Pack the following equipment for your next vacation and never miss a workout. Resistance Bands Spend more time by the pool and less time working out on vacation when you double the effect of your squats with these rubber bands. Each band is a stretchable loop that you wear around both legs at once, and they’re conveniently compact and lightweight. (Pro tip: Wear your band just above your knees for the most resistance!) You can incorporate your bands into any workout, as the level of resistance you choose with the band will impact the amount of work your muscles do. The best part about this equipment is that it packs a punch for your glutes, and it’s small enough to fit in a purse. Core Sliders Traveling is a great time to have a few extra cheat meals, but you don’t want this indulgence to come at the expense

of your core strength. While you’re on vacation, keep your gut strong with core sliders. These thin, round discs are placed under your hands or feet as you pull and push your limbs away from your body in a plank position. They are the perfect tool for when a crunch just isn’t enough or when you’d rather not lay on the hotel floor. Swim Goggles

Make your swimming routine more effective, and (literally) keep your eye on the prize, with a pair of swim goggles. Most goggles are small, and some even come with their own case. The key is to find a pair that fits your head well. Unlike resistance bands or sliders, which all function the same general way, an ineffective pair of goggles can leave you fidgeting with your gear more than actually working out. Try on a few pairs or read through the reviews before making your selection. You can feel the burn on vacation without getting a sunburn. Pack these lightweight tools in your carry-on and jet away on new adventures this summer. 4
