55 YEARS OF BEATTIE FLANIGAN CONSULTING ENGINEERS

PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES OF BUILDING SERVICES ENGINEERING DESIGN SINCE 1971, BEATTIE FLANIGAN DELIVERS EDUCATION, COMMERCIAL, INDUSTRIAL AND, MOST-PREDOMINANTLY, COMPLEX HEALTHCARE PROJECTS… Beattie Flanigan celebrates 55th anniversary

Marking 55 years of engineering excellence in 2026, Beattie Flanigan continues to innovate and impress with its meticulous bespoke building services engineering design. An early adopter and champion of low-carbon sustainable solutions, the Belfast-based company leads the way in specialised services, from its own clerk-of-works department to the island of Ireland’s only registered Authorising Engineer for healthcare. Delivering education, commercial, industrial and complex healthcare schemes in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain, the firm has rapidly expanded its workforce and client base over the last five years. Pushing the boundaries of design and engineering since 1971, Beattie Flanigan was founded by former employees of Belfast-based National Industrial Fuel Services, who were faced with relocation to England after the firm was acquired by a multi-national.

Bill Beattie, Harry Flanigan, Ernie Gilmore, Stanley Hamilton and Bob Buick set up their first offices on Belfast’s Antrim Road, with Liz Buick as secretary, relocating twice over the years before settling at Beattie Flanigan’s current Castlereagh headquarters in 2005. From its early days, the practice gained a reputation for specialism and expertise in the design of steam boiler houses, particularly in hospitals, while soon evolving into a multidisciplinary mechanical and electrical building services consultancy. ºWorking across numerous sectors, Beattie Flanigan has taken pride in its long-term partnerships with local architectural practices and clients, many of which extend back to its early years. The same approach is applied to its own team, with a focus on attracting, supporting and retaining talent and all employees offered and encouraged with the opportunity to become Chartered Engineers. Managing Director Jason Fisher

himself joined as a junior engineer 35 years ago and, in the five years since celebrating its golden anniversary, the firm has doubled its team to 16. “There hasn’t been any turnover in our staff in three years, which in this day and age is remarkable,” says Jason. “Beattie Flanigan proudly has a high ratio of female engineers, including our Associate Mechanical Engineer Catherine McCartan, who has been with us for 10 years. “Everyone is talking about a skills shortage, but we develop and nurture our own talent and there are plenty of keen, enthusiastic engineers out there. When we first looked at taking on our first two apprentices, three years ago, we got 57 applications and could easily have taken 50.” As it looks to the future, Beattie Flanigan is tentatively trialling AI. “The important thing is having the skill, experience, competence and knowledge to properly interrogate AI and exercise professional responsibility with it,” says Jason.
