Riley Children's Health Annual Report – October 2026

RILEY HEART CENTER

The interventional cardiologists at Riley Children’s Health have expertise in using the latest invasive, catheter-based procedures to diagnose and treat congenital heart conditions. Our skilled specialists provide essential anatomic evidence during diagnostic procedures to direct cardiovascular surgical interventions. They also repair heart conditions such as patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect that allow both children and adults to avoid open heart surgery. INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGY

Riley Children’s treats infants with some severe forms of congenital heart disease with pulmonary artery flow restrictors. Our interventional cadiologists modify a microvascular plug in order to allow a small amount of blood to flow through the device. The flow restrictors are then placed in the pulmonary arteries of small infants. This minimally invasive procedure protects the lungs, allowing time for babies to grow and become stronger before open heart surgery.
