Health Starts at Home Jennifer Lynn Barkin (DC 1997) graduated from the Dietrich College with a major in statistics. She developed an assessment, known as the Barkin Index for Maternal Functioning, using human health data research and focus groups with new moms. The 20-item tool measures how people cope with daily life in the 12 months following childbirth. It addresses not only physical functioning, but mental and emotional well-being.
Going for Gold
Piquing Your Creativity By day, alumnus Arnav Jhunjhunwala (DC 2009) helps build an infrastructure foundation for India’s sustained growth though his company Alom Poly Extrusions. At night, he engages his creative energies through writing, penning a collection of poetry, a short story and a blog, “Arnav’s Angle.” Noah Halloran (DC 2021) assisted the NBC Sports production team at the 2020 Olympics in his hometown of Tokyo, Japan. Posted at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, he helped ensure the smooth coverage of a record 37 swimming events broadcasted to TV and streaming audiences around the globe. Shifting the Culture Kevin Jarbo (DC 2015, 2018) came to Pittsburgh with a plan to study biology and become a physician. But over the next 19 years, his path diverged. Now he is teaching a Grand Challenge seminar class, “We’re Not Beyond Race: Race and Identity in America,” as his first course as an assistant professor in the Social and Decision Sciences Department.
