Personal bests for Rockland track stars

Alexa Van Every winds up for her winning toss in the shot put.

Matt Rossi surges ahead in the 200-metre.

championships in Brockville, RDHS finished 33rd overall out of 75 schools competing, putting Rockland in at least the top third for high school track and field in Eastern Ontario. The top six athletes in each event in the midget, junior and senior divisions move on to the Eastern Regionals in Brockville, at Thousand Islands Secondary School. Representing RDHS will be Matt Rossi in senior boys’ 100-metre sprint and the 200-metre, GavinWestbrook in junior boys’ 1500-metre, Alexa Van Every in junior girls’ shotput, and Tanner Van Every in senior boys’ 110-metre hurdles and the triple jump. “I was afraid I wouldn’t qualify,” said

Alexa Van Every, smiling. “So I was really happy. I was proud. Mrs. K. was proud too. I saw it in her face.” For GavinWestbrook, his EOSSAA result was a personal best for him in long-distance running. “I kind of expected it,” he said. “I knew the pace would be quick going in. I felt really good. I did a head count partway, to see where I was and whether I needed to push or to pull back.” Tanner Van Every also celebrated a per- sonal best result in the hurdles, shaving 0.05 seconds off his former best time. He’s also more than happy with the third-place result for his triple jump efforts.

“I was up against people older than me, more experienced,” he said. “In triple jump, the only people who beat me were all in Grade 12.” Matt Rossi finished in third in both his events, which satisfies him for now. “I was expecting a little bit better,” he said. “It was windy, a bit chilly, and I wasn’t feeling my best. But I was still happy with the results.” All four RDHS track athletes are looking at achieving qualifying results at the Eastern Regionals so they can go on to the Ontario Federal of Secondary School Athletic Asso- ciations’ provincial championships later in the season.
