From The Desk To The Gym With AUTUMN MCGARVEY

Fitness has always been a part of my life. I was always an avid sports fanatic, playing volleyball, basketball, and softball in high school and basketball in college. I received a degree in finance from St. Ambrose University. After college, I was employed by Wells Fargo Bank as a Personal Banker. I knew then that this was not the career I wanted for the rest of my life. I did not want to sit behind a desk. I wanted to change someone’s life in a positive way by improving their health, fitness, confidence, and self-esteem. Jon DeBord gave me an opportunity to chase after my dreams and pursue my passion. I worked for Kewanee Physical Therapy and Rehab Specialists as a Front Desk Assistant before transitioning and receiving my Certification in Personal Training from the American College of Sports Medicine. Since then, I haven’t looked back! Every day I train individuals ranging from young athletes wanting to get faster and stronger to elderly clients wanting to maintain the activities of daily living. What I love about this career is how rewarding it is. I get to motivate individuals, watch them make progress, and help them achieve their goals. A regular exercise routine has great rewards! I want to give you the motivation to keep pushing to achieve success.

“You can do anything as long as you have the passion, the drive, the focus, and the support.” -Sabrina Bryan

DOES ARTHRITIS PAIN GRIND YOU DOWN? Millions of Americans suffer through arthritis pain every day, taking Ibuprofen and stronger medications to numb the pain and address the ongoing inflammation. The definition of arthritis is joint inflammation, however the term has acquired a wider meaning. Arthritis is now used as a generic term for osteoarthritis and other conditions that affect joints. The pattern, severity and location of arthritis symptoms can vary depending on the specific form of the disease.

Typically, arthritic conditions are characterized by pain and stiffness in and around one or more joints. The symptoms can develop gradually or suddenly. Certain rheumatic conditions can also involve the immune system and various internal organs of the body. Physical therapy is an important part of the ongoing treatment for arthritis. Physical therapy strengthens, stretches and stabilizes muscles surrounding affected joints providing needed support. Relieving Joint Pain Exercising is important to help reduce joint pain and stiffness. Light to moderate-intensity physical activity can actually prevent a decline in function, even restoring health. However, some people with arthritis may be reluctant to exercise because of joint pain after activity. You can take various steps to relieve pain, such as heat and cold therapy, or pain relievers, making it easier for you to exercise and stay active. In addition to physical therapy, choose non–impact exercises such as bicycling, swimming or water exercise. Furthermore, research shows that even modest

weight loss combined with exercise is more effective in decreasing pain and restoring function than either weight loss or exercise alone. If you are suffering with arthritis pain, call us today and discover how we can relieve your pain, returning you to a more active, pain-free lifestyle!

HIP, KNEE & LEG PAIN “Don’t Let Stiff Joints Slow You Down!”

INSIDE: • Does Arthritis Pain Grind You Down? • Healthy Recipe • Relieve Hip Pain In Minutes • Patient Success Spotlight

Do you suffer from knee, hip or leg pain? You are not alone. CDC studies show that 30% of adults have reported some form of knee, hip or ankle joint stiffness or pain in a 30 day period. The hip and knee joints are incredible marvels of the human body. At times they have to withstand up to 6 times your body weight in force. The knee joint is the second most complicated joint in the body and has to move in many directions including forward, backward, side to side and rotation. These different movements are called accessory motions and are needed for normal walking, running and bending. When you experience pain in the side of the hip, groin, thigh or knee, you may have difficulty with these accessory motions. Prolonged sitting, injuries, arthritis and disease can affect accessory motions. With every day use, tissues around the hip and knee joints tighten, leading to a gradual loss of motion. This causes a lot of pressure to build up on specific parts of the joints.

When Your Motion is Lost When you lose the movement of the hip, knee or ankle joints, your muscles have to take on the abnormal strain. This leads to common aches and pains experienced by millions of people. Many people feel that medication will help solve their hip, knee or leg pain. While medication can help to decrease inflammation and pain, it cannot address the root cause of the problem. Most pain in the hip, thigh, knee or leg comes from poor flexibility, strength or coordination. Treating Leg Pain To determine the source of your leg pain our physical therapists examine your walking, squatting, joint movement, comparing the strength and mobility of the joints. A comprehensive treatment plan, including special hands–on techniques, is made to achieve the fastest relief and the longest lasting results. If you are suffering with hip, knee or leg pain, call us today to learn how we can eliminate your pain and put a spring back in your step! Look inside to learn more and say good-bye to that aching knee or hip!

How To Avoid Developing Severe Stiffness In The Operated Knee Following Total Knee Replacement FREE WORKSHOP REVEALS THE SINGLE BIGGEST #1 SECRET TO ENSURE SUCCESSFUL RECOVERY FROM TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT

Dear Fellow Porter County Resident, Has your knee finally had it? • Walking has become so excruciating? • Stairs have become intimidating? • You just can’t stand for any length of time anymore?

Successful Recovery from Total Knee Replacement Workshop By request, I’m hosting the Successful Recovery from Total Knee Replacement Workshop on:

And it’s not just the pain in your knee, what’s more frustrating is… • Missing out on spending quality family time with your spouse, kids and grandkids. • Giving up on your hobbies… golf, bowling, tennis, shopping, or just plain going out to dinner. • Feeling like you’re not the same person anymore. It’s discouraging! Is Total Knee Replacement for You? Knee replacement, also called arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to resurface a knee damaged by arthritis. Metal and plastic parts are used to cap the ends of the bones that form the knee joint, along with the kneecap. The great news is…90% of patients who undergo Total Knee Replacement experience dramatic pain relief, which allows patients to get back to enjoying the simple things of daily life again! Stiff Knee Syndrome (in medical lingo, Arthrofibrosis) This condition can occur after surgery on the knee, such as a knee replacement. Over time, scar tissue builds up inside the knee, causing the knee joint to shrink and tighten. Scar tissue from stiff knee syndrome can severely impact your knee’s range of motion. In the most severe instances, it can result in a permanent inability to bend and straighten the knee. Some knee stiffness following a total knee replacement is normal. Severe stiffness is not. But what can go wrong? So how do you know if you have stiff knee syndrome? • You walk with a bent knee • There is increased amount of pain which could be the result of stiff knee syndrome, especially when it occurs along with reduced flexibility. •There is swelling in the soft tissue around your knee. This is different than swelling due to fluid buildup. Here comes Total Knee Replacement…

Here’s some of what you’ll learn during the workshop: • The #1 risk factor for developing severe stiffness and how you can combat this • The top 3 things you can do to prevent Stiff Knee Syndrome and not have to worry about it • Why this one thing you do before surgery can improve your chances of a quicker recovery by 29% • The 3 most effective simple do-it-yourself techniques to ensure successful recovery from total knee replacement • And how NASATechnology can help get you to the “new” you quickly and easily following total knee replacement So call my office now at 309-852-2200 to reserve your spot. Due to the interactive nature of this workshop, we are limiting attendance to only 15 spots.

1. Shop Well For Yourself It is more important then ever to stock your kitchen with healthy foods. Have healthy snacks handy. The more convenient they are, the more likely you are to eat them. Instead of thinking about what you shouldn’t eat, promise to eat your 3 to 5 servings of vegetables each day. 2. Schedule Your Exercise Your schedule will be very hectic this year, like every year. Schedule your workouts just as you would any other appointment. It’s okay if you can’t make it to class, but make sure that you get some activity in at least three days per week. 3. Just Say No You probably aren’t aware how much extra food you consume just from people offering it to you. A sample at the market here, an extra cookie at an office party there and it all adds up. Just think twice before you take that food and decide if you really want it. 5HEALTH TIPS FOR THE NEWYEAR

4. Skip the Baking Do you make baked goods for giving? Chances are you eat much of what you bake. Who wouldn’t? Instead make non-food gifts, or prepare ingredients for baked goods and put them in pretty jars — this year, let your gift recipient bake it up. That way, they can eat it when they want it and you don’t have to be tempted in the kitchen. 5. Hydrate Keep your water bottle with you at all times. You should be drinking eight, 8-ounce glasses of water each day. One handy trick is to buy a 64 ounce water jug. Fill it up in the morning and know that you need to finish it by the end of the day.
