Weekly Market Recap | July 27 – July 31, 2026
The stock market endured another volatile week , yet the S&P 500 demonstrated impressive resilience, briefly trading above the 7,500 level on Friday before finishing just below that milestone. Investors spent the week digesting a Federal Reserve meeting, a flood of earnings reports, economic data, rising Treasury yields, higher oil prices, and continued volatility throughout the semiconductor sector. The Federal Reserve left the federal funds rate unchanged at 3.50%-3.75% , but the statement carried a noticeably more hawkish tone than many investors expected. Three members dissented in favor of raising rates, while Fed Chair Kevin Warsh reiterated that inflation remains above target and that policymakers are prepared to keep monetary policy restrictive until price stability is restored. Those comments pushed Treasury yields sharply higher, with the 10-year Treasury yield climbing from roughly 4.60% to 4.75% during the week.
Energy also became a major storyline. WTI crude oil settled at $84.57 per barrel , capping an impressive 21% gain during July . Rising energy prices fueled inflation concerns while simultaneously boosting energy-sector earnings expectations, creating another headwind for interest-rate-sensitive areas of the market.
Corporate earnings ultimately dictated investor sentiment. Semiconductor stocks remained under pressure early in the week as investors questioned AI infrastructure spending, memory pricing, and valuation concerns. That narrative changed dramatically after Microsoft delivered stronger-than-expected earnings and upbeat guidance, reigniting confidence in enterprise AI spending. Reports that hedge fund Situational Awareness liquidated its public equity portfolio after significant AI-related losses were viewed by many traders as a capitulation event, helping remove one source of persistent selling pressure. The rally accelerated Friday after Amazon reported another exceptional quarter, reinforcing confidence that hyperscale cloud providers continue investing aggressively in artificial intelligence infrastructure. Amazon surged nearly 15% , while Microsoft, Alphabet, and NVIDIA also posted strong gains, allowing the major averages to finish the week higher despite rising Treasury yields and only modestly positive market breadth. Apple, however, weighed on sentiment after issuing disappointing fiscal fourth- quarter revenue guidance. Sector performance reflected the renewed appetite for growth. Consumer Discretionary led the market with an 8.3% weekly gain thanks largely to Amazon’s outsized move. Communication Services followed with a 5.4% advance as mega-cap technology continued to dominate institutional buying. Consumer Staples and Financials also finished modestly higher, while Utilities fell 4.2% , making it the week’s weakest sector as higher bond yields pressured defensive dividend-paying stocks . Economic data painted a picture of an economy that continues to slow without breaking. Second-quarter GDP expanded at 1.5% , consumer spending remained resilient, weekly jobless claims stayed below 200,000, and June PCE inflation continued moderating on a year-over-year basis. While inflation is gradually cooling, it remains well above the Federal Reserve’s 2% objective, suggesting interest rates could remain elevated longer than many investors anticipated at the beginning of the year.

Momentum continues to favor growth-oriented assets , although leadership remains increasingly concentrated in a handful of mega-cap technology names. Rising Treasury yields continue to pressure longer-duration assets, while strength in crude oil has pushed Energy back into a leadership role. Gold remains constructive as investors continue balancing inflation concerns against tighter monetary policy.

Remember, markets rarely move in a straight line. When leadership narrows, risk management becomes increasingly important. Continue trimming extended Stage 2 positions and recycle capital into quality Stage 1 opportunities as they emerge.
Dogs of the Dow
The Dogs of the Dow strategy continues to offer attractive dividend yields heading into August. Higher interest rates have kept pressure on several traditional dividend stocks, allowing investors to collect historically attractive income while waiting for price appreciation.
Current Dogs of the Dow remain concentrated in defensive sectors including healthcare, energy, telecommunications, and consumer staples. With bond yields elevated, investors should continue comparing dividend yields against Treasury rates while focusing on companies with strong balance sheets and sustainable cash flows.
Income investors should remember that the Dogs strategy is designed for long-term wealth creation through dividends, not short-term trading. Periods of underperformance often create the best future buying opportunities.
Market Outlook
The primary trend remains bullish , but several risks deserve close attention. Rising oil prices, elevated Treasury yields, persistent inflation, and increasingly concentrated market leadership all argue for disciplined portfolio management. Earnings season has once again demonstrated that fundamentals matter. Companies exceeding expectations continue to be rewarded aggressively, while even slight disappointments are met with swift selling. That makes trading fun to be sure.

The Money Flow and the Four Stages of Price Movement
The stock market goes up as much as 71% of the time . The problem is it is not a straight line . Price can only do one of three things. Move up, move down move sideways . I believe price does this in 4 stages. By identifying the stage, we can better allocate our buys to take advantage of sell offs (stage 4 decline) and maximize price increases to take profits in during a stage 3 distribution zone. YOU MUST MEMORIZE the pattern you see in this picture. You should see it in your sleep. It is the master key to understanding price movement, and The Money Flow Trading System.
The Money Flow Trading System is a trend follow strategy that hopes to capture the up trends and avoid, or downsize share size, and capitalize by shorting the down moves depending on your goals. This strategy is based on the belief that price moves in four stages and 71% of that move the S&P500 is in stage 2 breakout, the market up phase.
The Basic Money Flow Trading System Technical Indicator List

This simple leveraged portfolio holds equal amounts of technology - TQQQ, TMF - Bonds, and S &P 500 I highly recommend you use M1 Finance it allows partial shares and easy rebalancing of the portfolio. I plan to borrow against the fund during corrections to leverage up the fund. The swings can be incredible Returns so its HIGH RISK – Possible high reward – there are no stops. I add shares on stage 1s rebalance portfolio periodically. This is an experiment in holding 3x funds over a long period of time and I am willing to lose all these funds. I have added $25-50 a day for almost 3 years. I trim on stage 3’s and add shares on stage 1’s. Always in the market just downsize or increase size of position based on market conditions.
