8.2 Network and destination development Belgrade - Shanghai: a new intercontinental route
The new connection strengthens Belgrade's role as a regional hub and improves access between Serbia, the Western Balkans and East Asia. For travellers from the region it provides faster and more direct travel to China, while passengers from China gain convenient onward connections through Belgrade to more than twenty European cities in the Air Serbia network, including Vienna, Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, Milan and Zurich. By supporting business, trade and inbound tourism in both directions, the route contributes to the economic value the company generates for Serbia and the wider region. As a long-haul connection, the route also adds to the company's overall carbon footprint. Air Serbia approaches network growth under its broader climate strategy , through fleet modernisation, fuel-efficiency measures and its emissions-management commitments, so that expansion is pursued alongside efforts to limit emissions per passenger-kilometre and improve operational efficiency.
On 11 January, Air Serbia launched a direct service between Belgrade and Shanghai (People's Republic of China). The route operates twice weekly during the winter season and continues into the summer season from 30 March 2025. It connects Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport with Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), one of the principal aviation hubs of East Asia, which handled more than 54 million passengers in 2023.
