Though we think of November, and December as months 11 and 12, these months were 9 and 10 on the ancient Roman calendar. This is how they got their names. November: November’s name comes from novem, Latin for “nine.” December: December’s name come from decem, Latin for “ten.”

Since turkey is a uniquely American (and scrumptious) bird, it gained traction as the Thanksgiving meal of choice for Americans after Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Pilgrims and the Thanksgiving holiday were used to teach children about American freedom and how to be good citizens.

Who was William Bradford? He was to have been born in 1590, William Bradford became a leading figure in the Puritans’ Separatist movement. He and other congregants eventually sailed from England on the Mayflower to establish a colony in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where Bradford became longtime governor after a devastating winter.
