Alfred College council has a plan GREGGCHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

whole session of the United Counties of Prescott-Russell council (UCPR), outlining the history, current situation, and the poten- tial future for Alfred College. The president of le Conseil communautaire du Collège Alfred (CCCA) emphasized that his group is working hard with officials from both La Cité collégiale and Boréal Collège on plans to keep Alfred College open and operating as a post-secondary institution focused on agricultural science and research and ser- ving the needs of its student body, both “francophones and Francophiles”. Earlier this year the University of Guelph, Alfred College’s parent institution, an- nounced plans to close down both its Alfred and Kemptville campuses as part of budge- tary operation cutbacks. Concern and pro- tests from community leaders in Prescott- Russell and other parts of Eastern Ontario have brought the provincial government stop the spread of those already here. Over the course of the summer, the Inva- sive Species Hit Squad, comprised of about 25 summer students, will monitor more than 200 local lakes, waterways and forests, looking for zebra mussels, spiny water flea, round goby, giant hogweed, garlic mustard, and other invaders. They will also contribute to a variety of efforts to control the spread of these invaders. Funding is being provi- ded by the federal government’s Canada Summer Jobs program. To report a sighting of an invasive species, or request information materials, the public can call the Invading Species Hotline at 1-800-563-7711.

into the situation with both the incumbent Liberals and the Opposition Progressive Conservative parties pro- mising action during their recent election campaigns to protect and maintain the colleges. Manley told counties council that the CCCA is now seeking moral sup- port from the community for its lobbying efforts with the provincial government to keep the college open, whether as part of a regio- nal effort in partnership with either La Cité collé- giale or Boréal Collège or the two of them together, or as an independent auto- nomous community colle- ge on its own. L’ORIGNAL | If Alfred College is going to have any kind of a future it will need the support of not just its local community but also of all the municipalities within both Prescott and Russell counties. That support does not have to involve money says the head of the college council but it does have be strong and solid and show that the farming communities in the re- gion need, want and are proud to have their own local agricultural college. “Let me make this clear,” said Tom Manley. “The success of Alfred College is going to be a question of ‘Use it or lose it.’” Manley presented a power-point sum- mary during the June 11 committee of the CHUTE-À-BLONDEAU | The battle against invaders continues this summer at Voya- geur Provincial Park where a «hit squad” is taking on plants that pose a growing threat to Ontario’s biodiversity. Mitchell Keller, a member of the Inva- ding Species Awareness Program (ISAP) Hit Squad, is attacking the European Water Chestnut in the park. «European water chestnut is an invasive species of focus within Voyageur,» said Kel- ler. «Preventing its spread by proper clea- ning of boating and fishing equipment is key. I encourage the public to report Euro- pean water chestnut sightings in your area by calling the Invading Species Hotline or through EDDMapS Ontario with your com- puter or smart phone.» Keller is an Invasive Species Community Outreach Liaison working with Voyageur and the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. The “hit squad” is working across the pro- vince again this summer to spread aware- ness about the impacts invasive species are having on the environment, economy, and society. Unwanted vegetation causes mil- lions of dollars in damage annually. There are more invasive species in Ontario than anywhere else in Canada. Tom Manely, president of le conseil communautaire du Collège Alfred, pitches a power-point summary of the past, present and hoped-for future for the agricultural college to the counties council as part of a community support campaign for the local post-secondary education institution.

“We used to take it (Alfred College) for granted,” said Jean-Paul Saint. Pierre, UCPR warden. “We can no longer take it for granted. The community needs to step up and take action.” “My support is assured,” said Mayor Jean- Yves Lalonde of Alfred-Plantagenet Town- ship, where the college is located. The CCCA request for a support resolution will now go to the UCPR economic deve- lopment and tourism advisory committee for further review and a future report with recommendations at a later meeting of the counties council.

sized that the CCCA is not asking for any kind of financial support agreement with the UCPR. “It is not what I am asking,”he said, adding that the provincial government, through the Ministry of Colleges and Universities would have ultimate responsibility for fi- nancing Alfred College, whether it operated as an independent institution or in partner- ship with La Cité collégiale and Boréal Col- lège. Manley’s presentation received verbal support from counties council members.
