JUNE 2018

OUR GREATEST ASSETS HowWe Set a Standard of Excellence in Our Industry

Safety is part of our culture, and it’s ingrained in everything we do. That means protecting our people and providing ongoing education and training so that our team can carry out their work safely. We recognize that it’s our responsibility to do it right the first time. That’s what allows us to stand behind our products and services to meet the needs of our customers. We can only succeed together, and through teamwork, we meet the needs of our customers and help the company and community win. We put a lot of effort into developing our staff because we know they are our greatest assets. We encourage their professional development because we value them. This allows for individual growth and fosters happier employees. It’s what allows us to provide the outstanding products and unsurpassed service to our customers. These are the hardworking teams people expect when they see the name Cornejo & Sons. Strong, lasting relationships at every level have always been a priority at Cornejo & Sons. By teaming up with established local businesses, we create

value, implement best practices, and offer a safe place to work while striving to exceed our environmental and social responsibilities. In addition to an approach that emphasizes teamwork, we bring an entrepreneurial lens to our partnerships so that other businesses benefit from our innovative ideas and we benefit from theirs because even in an established industry like ours, there’s always a need for improvement and innovation. Our company is deeply rooted in the community, and we desire to show respect and act as good citizens where we work, live, and play. It’s why you’ll see our staff giving their time, money, and energy to places like the Kansas Food Bank or YMCA. We find satisfaction and accomplishment in giving back. It’s not just good business — it’s being a good neighbor.

In my role as the vice president of Ready Mix and Asphalt at Cornejo & Sons, I see to it that our team upholds its commitment to serve customers, co-workers, and neighbors with honesty and integrity. It’s the foundation of everything we do. At the end of the day, that’s our job — serving our community. We’re not just building roads and pouring concrete; we’re building relationships. How do we ensure our values are shared by everyone on our team, from our transport drivers to our president? It starts with recognizing our greatest assets — our people. When we make a choice about whom to bring onto the team, we select people who exemplify our values. They don’t just believe in them — they live them at home, at work, and in how they choose to give back. It’s how I know that on any day, at any job, our team is carrying out their work according to our standards. They are delivering a premium value to our customers with hard work, genuine interactions, honesty, and authenticity. These values comprise the foundation of Cornejo & Sons, and our people demonstrate these attributes every day.

5 TECHNOLOGY SAFETY METHODS

Making Road Construction Safer for Regular Road Users

5. Smarter Work Zones. One of the more common accidents that occurs during construction happens when traffic becomes congested. Eric Perry, the senior technical advisor for ATSSA, states, “More than 30 percent of their work zone fatalities are occurring at the back of a queue.” Several programs have been developed to prevent these misfortunes. However, due to the extra cost of $5,000 for putting them into place, they haven’t been adopted as thoroughly as they should be. Knowing the steps that are being taken to prevent fatalities is a great start, but beginning to implement the means is another matter. Identifying the cause of accidents can lead to a better understanding of how accidents happen, and then we can build to prevent those accidents.

have obtained alert technology and cameras that notify drivers of obstacles they would have otherwise missed. With the use of such technology, work-zone awareness can spread to both the workers and the drivers. 3. Wearable Technologies This development allows workers to wear a device that alerts them when a vehicle has entered a work zone. The device alerts the wearer through vibrations, audio, and a flashing light. This lets workers know what’s happening around them, enabling them to be more aware and cautious. 4. Remote Monitoring. The idea behind remote monitoring is to relay information between workers and road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles. With the use of drones, LIDAR, and sensors, information about a construction site can be accurately assessed.

We at Cornejo & Sons take safety very seriously. We know that there are many accidents at construction sites throughout the year, and we do our best to prevent such tragedies. New technologies are being developed, and some trends are already in motion to prevent and lower the number of deaths in construction zones. The American Traffic Safety Services Association, or ATSSA, has discovered various causes and narrowed them down to the five most general. 1. Wrong-Way Driving This is one of the largest problems and causes of roadway construction accidents. To prevent this, LaneAlert2x is a device that displays messages or colors telling drivers where it’s safe to drive before they make a mistake.

2. Equipment/Vehicle Technologies In recent years, trucks, cars, and other vehicles

Inefficient systems and models cost your business valuable time and money. This problem is most evident in expense reports. The old way of doing things — gathering receipts from employees, entering data, and making sure all of the financial pieces are put together — takes an immense amount of time. As a business grows, this process is only amplified. The amount of documentation needed for managing all employee-related work expenses becomes a mountain range of paper and a monument of inefficiency. That’s where Expensify comes in.
