The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter PRINCIPAL REPORT

MEET AND GREET DAY – JANUARY 30, 2024

ROLE OF THE LEARNING COACH

The Meet and Greet session will begin this journey of developing student goals and targets. Goals set will be both academic and wellbeing focussed. The Learning Coach will be the classroom teacher on the Primary Campus. On the Secondary Campus, this role will be allocated based on a system where students and teachers can develop authentic relationships based on learning advocacy needs. This change will mean that the Learning Coaches will be the FIRST POINT OF CONTACT for all students, parents/ carers on ALL student related issues including learning progress and wellbeing matters.

A Learning Coach is a and a motivator who helps to further stimulate learning and establish a suitable structure for the school day. guide, a supporter, Coaching may be described as a process that aims to enhance performance and place emphasis on learning in the ″ now ″ rather than the past or the uncertain future . The primary goal of education is to impart new information and abilities to students. The primary goals of coaching are the enhancement and expansion of one ’ s knowledge and abilities through an emphasis on learner growth. The goal of Learning Coaches at The Lakes is to support all students to have agency over their learning to enable them to grow and achieve whilst having the ongoing support of a trusted adult who is deeply knowledgeable about the student as both a person and a learner. The successful implementation of the DET Tutor Learning Program and the Year 10 Middle Years Literacy and Numeracy Initiative are also drivers of this adaptation for changes to our operations.

The expectation will be that both parents/carers and students attend the session either in person or online.

PARENT/CARER–TEACHER INTERVIEWS 2023 / STUDENT AGENCY DAYS 2024 As our College implements our goal of ‘ High Expectations ’ for all learners, we will be renaming Parent/Carer - Teacher Interviews to ‘ Student Agency Days ’. These interviews will be data driven, with both the student and Learning Coach sharing progress on academic assessment results and work dispositions: attitude, effort, attendance/punctuality and collaboration. Students will be required to attend and lead these discussions about themselves as learners as we build genuine student agency and capacity to take ownership of their learning and educational aspirations. SCHOOL PRIDE – WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO IN 2024 I am pleased to report that works continue in the refurbishment of College facilities. The Prep - Year 1 toilets are nearing completion. The Year 6 portable and the Secondary PD room has had a new air conditioning installed and new carpeting across the remainder of the learning street will be installed over the next holiday period. We are erecting new signage at the front of both Campuses, and are excited with the upcoming installation of the new synthetic basketball court on Primary. On the Secondary Campus, we are in the process of finishing our student locker upgrades and installing new fencing across Jardier Tce. Thank you to our wonderful School Councillors for their amazing volunteer work and assistance to the upgrades.

The key aspect of the role will be to:

1. Gather data from a range of school - based and official DET sources in order to create a clear understanding of each learner and their ongoing needs. 2. Regularly communicate this information with students and parents/carers to enhance transparent and on time communications and feedback beyond scheduled meetings.

COLLEGE LEADERSHIP SUPPORT

The Learning Coach Program will be led by our three newly appointed Learning Specialists on both campuses. They will be supported by two Leading Teachers for Teaching & Learning and a manager for Data Achievement across the College. Additional middle managers on both campuses will be appointed to work with the Learning Coaches, support staff, students and parents/carers. In 2023, we have contracted the highly respected educator, Dr Jane - Louise Collins from Ed Partnerships to introduce our College community to the concept of Learning Coaches and set up structures and processes that will enable us to create the vehicle that markedly improves student performance.
