to deterring and reducing crime. This ap- proach includes mobilizing and engaging social service agencies and community groups and members to identify the root causes of crime affecting the safety, se- curity, and wellbeing of Ontarians. Crime prevention through social development

(CPSD) targets socio-economic risk factors that cause crime and place people – espe- cially children and youth – at greater risk of becoming criminals, victims, or both. These collaborative problem-solving partnerships support the identification and delivery of responsive strategies and programs to ad-

dress community needs. The strategies and programs developed target areas of crime and prolific offend- ers. “Now more than ever, it is important to exercise due diligence over how and where we spend the public funds with which we are entrusted,” says the O.P.P.

The Internet as schoolhouse VANKLEEK HILL | The Internet is simi- lar to the old one-room schoolhouse model in that it allows people to learn as part of a community. Luc Comeau will make that point at Arbor Gallery, 36 Home Ave., Vankleek Hill, January 19 at 7:30 p.m. Part of the Speaker Series, the talk will touch upon local needs, educational at- tainment and conditions for economic progress, and present examples of on- line learning. Comeau will guide the audience in identifying courses, pro- grams and services available to eve- ryone, some of which are free. He will present his views on where learning is headed in the21st Century, and will conclude with a telling example about how someone in Vankleek Hill is using the Internet to greatly advance her edu- cation. The program is based on the Ontario’s Mobilization and Engagement Model of Community Policing. This new model is a proactive approach HAWKESBURY | “Yes, you can make a difference.” That is the prime message of the newly-launched Youth Engage- ment Strategy recently launched by the Hawkesbury Ontario Provincial Police detachment in the four high schools in Prescott County. The brain child of detachment com- mander, Inspector Bryan Mackillop, the concept has been introduced at Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute, l’École secondaire Le Sommet, L’École catholique secondaire régionale de Hawkesbury et l’École secon- daire de Plantagenet. “Once it starts rolling, it will pick up speed,” observes Constable Pierre Dubois, a community services officer with the de- tachment. The pilot project encourages students to take on leadership roles in their commun- ity, to develop tangible solutions to public safety issues based on peer consultations and to mobilize and engage the student body. “Partnering for a safe community” is a theme of the initiative.
