Amazon Votes For Ocean Protection reported by Greg Kishbaugh I n a display of support in the fight against plastic pollution, 48.9 percent of shareholders of Amazon.com supported an As You Sow shareholder resolution at the company’s recently concluded annual meeting. The resolution asked the world’s
largest online retailer to disclose how much plastic packag- ing it uses and report on ways it can significantly reduce the overall use of plastic for packaging. More than 181 million shares with a market value exceeding $387 billion supported the proposal, providing the highest level of support among 15 shareholder proposals on social and environmental issues on this year’s Amazon proxy state- ment. When management and insider shares are discounted, the proposal was approved by an estimated 59 percent of non-company related shares.

Amazon’s substantial and growing use of plastic packaging exposes the company to increased finan- cial and reputational risk from millions of tons of plastic that end up in oceans and the environment, the proposal states, and the company lags its peers on disclosure and commitment to reducing plastic used for packaging. At the heart of the plastic pollution problem are single-use plastics like those generated by Amazon packaging, which makes up the largest component of ocean-bound plastic pollution. Amazon has not disclosed how much plastic it uses, but is believed to be one of the largest corporate users of flexible plastic packaging with heavy use of plastic e-com- merce mailers, which are generally not recycled. A recent report by the non-profit group Oceana es- timated that Amazon generated 599 million pounds of e-commerce plastic packaging in 2020. The com- pany said the report overestimated its plastics use but has declined to disclose its actual e-commerce plastic usage or the amount of plastic used in its 400+ private-label brand operations. “This vote supported by a majority of non-man- agement shareholders confirms that a wide range of mainstream investors are challenging Amazon to elevate the issue of plastic pollution and develop Buying Green Report (Cont’d from Page 1)
credible solutions to the global plastic pollution crisis now,” stated Conrad MacKerron, senior vice president at As You Sow. “Breaking the Plastic Wave,” a recent comprehen- sive report from Pew Charitable Trusts calls on consumer goods companies to cut plastic demand by one-third through elimination, reuse, refill, and new delivery systems — one of eight simultane- ous interventions required to reduce ocean plastic deposition 80 percent by 2040. The company lags retailing peers like Target Corp. and Walmart who have disclosed the amount of plastic they use and made public commitments to As You Sow to reduce the use of virgin plastic for packaging by 2025. An estimated 11 million metric tons of plastics leak into oceans annually and this figure is expect- ed to grow to 24 million metric tons by 2040 un- less a range of drastic remedial actions are taken. Plastic particles are permeating our air, food, and water. Ocean plastic pollution causes fatalities in more than 800 marine species from ingestion, en- tanglement, suffocation, or drowning. The scientific community has warned that plastic pollution may be nearing an irreversible tipping point. The plastic lifecycle imposes costs on the environment, climate, and human health that are at least 10 times higher than the market price of plastics.

SA Label Market To Grow To $62.3B By 2026 The global self-adhesive labels market size is pro- jected to grow from $47.9 billion in 2021 to $62.3 billion by 2026, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 5.4 percent from 2021 to 2026, according to a new report from Market and Markets. Rising demand from the industrial and retail sec- tors is supporting the growth of self-adhesive la- bels market. Self-adhesive labels are used widely in developed countries; the market is growing at a higher rate in emerging economies. The prevailing environmental regulations in the market focus on the reduction of packaging ma- terials — boxes, bags, and pouches — to decrease the amount of waste accumulating in landfills, which contributes to the growth of the self-adhe- sive labels market. Release liners, by type, accounted for the largest market share in the self-adhesive labels market. In terms of both value and volume, flexography is projected to be the fastest-growing segment from 2021 to 2026, for self-adhesive labels. In terms of value, the APAC self-adhesive labels market is projected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period. Meyers Receives Hormel Foods Excellence Award Meyers, Minneapolis, Minnesota, a provider of re- tail brand packaging, product labeling, and retail merchandising in-store displays for global brands, has received the Hormel Foods Spirit of Excellence Award. The honor recognizes suppliers whose work with Hormel helps the company achieve its key results. Actega Unveils Sustainability Commitments Actega, a manufacturer of specialty coatings, inks, adhesives and sealing compounds for the print and packaging industry, has unveiled its latest strategic commitments toward operating more sustainably and supporting a more sustainable future for the industry. The company is developing and investing in its fa- cilities and R&D, and working together on a global scale to achieve this goal. Actega’s five tactics to achieving circular economy model are recycle, reduce, displace, replace and de- grade. Closely linked to tactics one, two and five, an initial raw materials investigation into the carbon footprint of Actega’s products concentrated on se- lected paper and board coatings. These first findings concluded that reducing the carbon footprint of binders within Actega’s wa- ter-based products can significantly reduce the products’ overall carbon footprint. This could be achieved by incorporating either exclusively bio- based materials or biomass balanced raw materials (using both the original components and a certain amount of certified renewable feedstock within ex- isting chemical pathways). Individual Actega facilities are also developing and implementing numerous projects, designed to boost each sites’ environmental credentials. As part of the Let’s Act campaign within the business, teams are working together to minimize their local environmental impact. Such initiatives range from significant invest- ments, like the installation of solar panels at Actega in Vigo, Spain, to utilizing specialized skills within the Lehrte, Germany, team to promote biodiversity and nature at the site, including successfully nurtur- ing six bee colonies. Fedrigoni Launches Range Of Open & Close Labels Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives has launched a new range of Open & Close products, including polypropylene and polyethylene films with a removable adhesive for high tear resistance, clean removability, good conformability, and reliability, said the company. The new range is designed for hand wipes, baby wipes, cosmetic wipes, household wipes and more - making opening easier, and ensuring secure product closure. ‘The latest market trends suggest adopting a mo- no-material approach (PE or BOPP) for both the flex packs and the Open & Close labels,” said Me- lissa Harton, Marketing Manager for North America at Fedrigoni. To make semi-rigid Open & Close labels more similar to rigid plastic lids, Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives has developed a patent that allows the label to re- main open during use to facilitate the removal of the wet wipes from the flexible packaging. XSYS Introduces Flexo Solution Finder XSYS has launched Flexo Solution Finder, a new online tool that helps printers and platemakers find solutions to help them optimize production and in- crease Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE) in the prepress department and in the press room. Tailored to each market segment, Flexo Solution Finder will reportedly guide users to the optimal printing plate or combination of plate, equipment, and surface screening software, from the compre- hensive XSYS portfolio. The tool guides users through a series of simple steps. First, they choose their active segment(s): flexible packaging, tag & label, corrugated pre-print or corrugated post-print, before identifying them- selves as a printer (with or without in-house plate- making) or as a repro house/trade shop. Once that has been established, the next step is to choose the ink type and then the substrate, before honing in on the specific area of concern, whether it is costs, print quality, productivity, or sustainabil- ity (including health & safety). Customers can find the answer to a plethora of problems, such as how to avoid plate swelling, ink filling and trail edge void; reduce press downtime or avoid waste caused by dirty highlight dots; min- imize complexity in the process overall; improve sustainability by eliminating solvents; lower ink and plate waste; improve productivity and efficiency.

UPM Raflatac Offers Label Material To Fight Pollution UPM Raflatac is reportedly the first company in the world to invest in Ocean Bound Plastics (OBP) waste as label raw material in their new Ocean Ac- tion labels. The Ocean Action labels are made from ocean bound plastic using mass balance approach. Ocean bound plastic is abandoned plastic waste re- covered from areas up to 50km inland from water- ways, defined as “at risk of ending up in the ocean” by OBPCert. The new label material is made possi- ble by close collaboration with multiple partners in the product’s value chain. The world desperately needs more sustainable and commercially viable ways to recycle post-con- sumer plastic, according to the company. The Unit- ed Nations has recognized the need to recycle more post-consumer plastic and launched a new plastic pollution treaty in 2021. OBPCert has estimated that ocean bound plastic generates 80 percent of plastic marine litter. Today, only around 10 percent of plastic waste globally gets recycled, while the rest ends up at landfills, in incineration, and leakage to nature or oceans. One solution to this problem lies in creating markets for

HHI has Ocean Bound Plastics certification under Zero Plastic Oceans program that ensures (Cont’d on Page 9) products made from ocean bound plastic. ”The new innovative Ocean Action label material is the latest step in our beyond fossils journey,” said Eliisa Laurikainen, Business Development Manager from UPM Raflatac. “It does not only help prevent the plastic waste from ending up in the oceans but also offers brand owners the possibility to meet their recycled content targets for packaging. The Ocean Action label material is an easy-to-use drop- in solution created especially for food and cosmet- ics end-uses as it has exactly the same performance as the current fossil-based labels.” The Ocean Action label material is available as White and Clear Top Coated PP films with RP37, RF37, and RP74 adhesives and PET 23 PCR and glassine liners.

the responsible sourcing, proper collection and management of the ocean bound plastic waste. After collecting and sorting the ocean bound plas- tic waste, HHI uses chemical recycling to convert the waste into pyrolysis oil. The pyrolysis oil is then used by SABIC to create high-quality PP plastic gran- ulates. After SABIC, the plastic granulates are used in the process in which the film manufacturer Taghleef Industries produces the label film that is used to pro- duce the final label material by UPM Raflatac. The plastic waste used in the value chain of mak- ing Ocean Action label material is certified under the Zero Plastics Oceans program, and the final la- bel material under ISCC PLUS. The label material is produced using sustain- able recycled feedstock, replacing the equivalent amount of virgin fossil resources used in the pro- duction process, using a mass balance approach, accounting for the amount of sustainable resources. These verify that the Ocean Action label material is traceable and sustainably sourced. FINAT Celebrates Future Label Talents
Flexo Market News I nternet D irectory
At the opening of the European Label Forum 2022 in Baveno, Italy, FINAT presented the winners of the #LABELicious competition 2022. This 3rd edi- tion of #LABELicious was intended to be a continu- ous opportunity to strengthen the relationship be- tween future talents for the label industry and the current active professionals in the field. During the conference, the theme of future work- force development was addressed at multiple occa- sions, concluding that the label and packaging sec- tor is a work environment that suits most, if not all, considerations of generations that enter the work- force in the near future. The brief of the 2022 edition, challenged young talents (between the age of 18 and 25) to design a label for the fictitious company HUMANDATE. The company name is a contraction of the words Hu- man and Mandate. The company uses the mandate given by people and planet to develop beautiful and relevant brands. Their new brand is Genergise, again a contraction of two words: Generation and Energise. Genergise aims to develop health and wellness products to make consumers aged over 60 feel like being under 30. In addition to the trophy for the overall winner, separate awards were announced for best perfor- mance in design, smart labeling and sustainability. The jury selected the following three winners from the nearly 100 completed registrations: Design : Gwen Calvo Suárez (Spain) Smart Labels : Jorge Casterad (Spain) Sustainability : Alessandro Tomaghelli (Italy) Jorge Casterad, was also announced as the overall winner.
