CWGO (Career Women’s Golf Organization) On December 17, 2016, CWGO had its first winter social. Tina Gwilliam, Amy DeWitt, Linda Smith, Pam Quinn, Sherie Balko, Joanne Waters and Becky Harper participated in the Wreaths Across America event at Arlington National Cemetery. It was a fantastic morning and we were able to visit the gravesite of our former member, Judie Armington, to pay our respects. A big “Thank You” to Tina for organizing. Our next winter social will be Pub Night Trivia on January 12 at Fairfax. We are putting together CWGO teams for this event. Food and beverages start at 7:00 PM and trivia begins at 7:30 PM. Please sign up here and email Tina at tinagwilliam@gmail.com to let her know that you are participating and she will organize the teams. If you want to play with certain folks, please let her know. More winter socials to come - stay posted! SAVE THE DATE – CWGO Kickoff Lunch and 9-hole Scramble will be held on Sunday, 1 April at Arlington (no, this is not an April Fool’s Day joke!). More details to follow.

Winter Golf Course Set Up

As part of our ongoing effort to improve the quality and consistency of our golf course playing conditions, the Golf & Green Committee approved the following action at the business meeting held on 8 November 2011. Winter play course set up at ANCC will commence on or about 1 December and remain in effect until approximately 1 March each season. During this time only two sets of tee markers will be placed on each hole – one forward and one back. In many cases artificial mats will be placed on the teeing ground. When this option is utilized, all players should play from the mat and refrain from use of the grass teeing ground. We believe that this course of action will minimize winter damage, promote faster spring recovery and provide superior playing conditions during the golf season, generally March through October. The Committee thanks you for your support. 2017 Northern Virginia Retired Men’s Golf Association (NVRMGA) Don’t miss out on a great experience of playing local country club courses. If you are 55+, you can join NVRMGA and do that! ANCC will field two teams, one at Arlington and one at Fairfax. Both teams are always looking for new players. The ANCC Arlington team was the league champion in 2015 and 2010, and co-champions with the ANCC Fairfax team in 2011. In 2016, the ARL team finished in 2nd place and the FFX team finished in 7th place. Also in 2016, the FFX team tied ARL at the Arlington course and defeated them at the Fairfax course. Both teams are looking forward to successful seasons in 2017. The 2017 ANCC teams will be put together within the next few months, so there is still time for you to sign up. How? Click here before 31 January 2017 for the ARL Team, and click here by 1 March 2017 for the FFX Team. Even if you were a NVRMGA player last year, it is required you sign-up again. A contact list will be posted on the golf bulletin board in each ANCC pro shop whereby eligible ANCC golfers not currently part of a team, but wishing to join us in 2017, can express interest. How does NVRMGA work? We play each of 12 opposing teams twice, once at home and once away between early April and mid-October. Play is on Thursdays, teeing off at 8:45 AM at home and either 8:45 or 9:00 away. Click here to read more on the NVRMGA Arlington page and here for NVRMGA Fairfax. Winter Golf continues during the inactive season from December through March. A minimum of ten 9-hole scores is required for completion. Sign up on the bulletin board in one of the locker rooms. Manually post your scores (using pencil) on the supplied score sheets on a bulletin board after you play. If you play 18 holes, post as two 9-hole scores. After completing 10 scores, if a future score is better than any of the ten listed, you can erase any score and replace it with an improved score. This process can be repeated until you have finished the season. At the end of the winter season, participants will be billed $5 and any winnings will be credited to their account. However, course conditions will dictate when scores can be posted and will be posted in the Golf Shops.

The American Sports Builders Association (ASBA), the national organization for builders and suppliers of materials for athletic facilities, has announced the winners of its annual awards distinguishing sports facilities which best exemplify construction and design excellence. Presentations of awards were made at the ASBA’s National Technical Meeting held last month in Amelia Island, Florida. Projects were scored individually based on consideration such as layout and design, site work, drainage, base construction, surface, amenities, innovation, and overall impression. Based on this criteria, ANCC’s Tennis facility was recognized as one of the nation’s distinguished tennis facilities and also received the top gold medal honor 2016 Outdoor Facility of the Year. Congratulations to ANCC Tennis as it continues to be recognized for its excellence on a national level. Top Flight Tennis @ ANCC Did You Know? Starting with the first tennis game played on an unkempt concrete court in 1924, in over 8 decades, tennis has steadily grown and matured as a major component of the ANCC experience. The new club house project initiated in 2009 included a major renovation and expansion of the tennis facilities. That effort resulted in a top notch complex that includes 14 outdoor underground “Hydro-Court” Har-Tru courts (ten of which are lighted), 2 Deco-Turf II hard courts, and a year-round indoor tennis center with 6 Deco Turf II hard courts. A new junior train- ing facility of 8 outdoor courts (36 feet) is dedicated to players age 10 years and under and is the largest of its kind among private clubs in the U.S. Tennis at ANCC is now recognized by state, regional and national tennis organizations as one of the few best tennis facilities in the country. WELL DONE to Joe Wang and his staff. Click here for more information.
