JULY 2018 LEDGER THE POWER OF A LOVING FAMILY THE 13375 University Avenue, Suite 100, Clive, IA 50325|www.thelivewellclinic.com|515.279.9900 FOSTERING HEALTH FROM INFANCY TO ADULTHOOD

T his last month, the Livewell Clinic team and I asked our patients to submit causes that they were truly passionate about in order to suggest an organization that our company could offer support to. We’ve always been passionate about giving back to the community of which we are a part, working to better the world we live in not only through the work we do in our clinic, but through everything we do personally and professionally. Though we received a lot of powerful submissions for nonprofits close to our patients’ hearts, one definitely stood out from the rest. In Charissa Flege’s letter, she extolled the virtues and importance of adoption in our modern world, advocating for an organization called Chelsey’s DreamFoundation with a passionate candor that really struck our team. You can read much of her letter on page 3 of this month’s newsletter, but for me, it aligned withmy own values from the very first sentence. “I have been at Livewell for a year now,” Charissa began, “and inmy opinion, its bottom-line philosophy is making people healthier and happier.” To her, that journey to health and happiness begins not in adulthood, whenmany of us suddenly start to think about our well-being and how it can be improved, but in the instant a child comes into this world. It may not be obvious why a functional medicine clinic chooses to support an organization that provides funds to people trying to adopt, but when you break it down, you realize that by supporting even a single orphan’s need to find a permanent, loving home, you’re making a tremendous impact on the health of that child from the outset. And really, I’ve long been passionate about helping children receive the care and treatment they need to develop into healthy, happy individuals. During my undergraduate studies, I joined a medical mission to the Central African Republic, spending a couple of months doing all kinds of medical work. One of our primary focuses was young mothers. We helped deliver babies, ensuring

they got the treatment they needed, and educated local communities about nutrition and child care. We gave them all the tools they’d need to help them and their children form a firm foundation in health. We evenmade a few trips out to a local agency packed full of children whose parents were, for one reason or another, unable to care for them. We spent hours helping them clean up the space, holding these orphaned babies and offering aid wherever we could. There, I saw firsthand the impact that the situation had on these kids: a long period of uncertainty and struggle before they could be placed— if they ever even had the opportunity— in a permanent home. At the Livewell Clinic, I often work with prospective parents struggling with infertility, searching for ways to bring a child into their lives. For some of these patients, adoptionmay be the only option to realize their dream of a full, happy family. So, it really means a lot to be able to give back to an organization that’s keenly dedicated to putting as many children as they can in loving homes. We want to give these families the opportunity to provide a loving, happy, and most of all healthy home as early as possible in children’s lives.

Every child deserves to have the healthiest start possible. The first few years are absolutely critical to a child’s development — not to mention, key to the formation of good habits that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. But the contemporary medical paradigm seems to not understand this. Though parents are encouraged to bring their child to a physician every six months or so, there’s not a lot of focus on actual health. Instead, medical providers, limited by time and resources, take an “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” approach. If a child seems fine, they must be, and until some kind of negative symptom flares up — or the physician is finally able to piece together a group of negative symptoms that they previously thought were normal — the child is sent on their merry way with little follow- through. Meanwhile, kids are taking in all kinds of toxins, setting themselves up for serious developmental issues down the road. What’s worse, just as with adults, when those symptoms do show up, the strategy is to throw medication and other band-aid “solutions” at it until the symptoms subside. Instead of addressing the problem at its root, the conventional health care system attempts to simply brush away the obvious signs that something is wrong. Whether that’s pain, fatigue, behavioral problems, or recurrent sickness, treating the symptoms and acting like nothing is wrong is even more dangerous when you’re dealing with a child. It’s a sad state of affairs in the medical establishment, but luckily, there is an alternative. At the Livewell Clinic, we work with patients of all ages — from infants to elderly adults — to zero in on potential issues and strengthen the body’s functioning at every level. These positive changes cascade to every aspect of the patient's life, especially if they’re able to start treatment early. If you’re truly committed to transforming your child’s health from the inside out, it’s important to start as soon as possible. ANNOUNCING OUR SUPPORT FOR CHELSEY’S DREAM FOUNDATION! A CAUSE WE CAN ALL BELIEVE IN

L ast month, we asked our readers to submit a cause they were passionate about to help us determine which organization we should sponsor and support in the months to come. We received several compelling submissions, but the most heartfelt, genuine, and persuasive letter came from Charissa Flege. We were moved by her words and thought our readers might be too! Read on for a lightly edited excerpt below. “Our family believes that, for orphaned children, the journey to health and happiness must start with adoption. Regardless of country, orphaned children consistently struggle with higher rates of anxiety, depression, heart disease, and almost everything else under the sun. But even though 1/3 of people in the U.S. have considered adoption, only about 2 percent actually adopt, often because of a lack of financial resources. “Adam and I are about six months into a two- to three-year process of adopting internationally from the Philippines, working to save the $30,000 projected cost by trimming down personal expenses, all while raising two little ones of our own. Introduction to Living Well Do you have questions about Functional Medicine? Do you wonder what the life of a Livewell Clinic patient is like? Are you curious about our services or how this clinic could help you? Then join us for an event designed just for you. This evening's experience will include Q&A time with our clinicians and an opportunity to have all your questions answered by various members of our team. Our office will be open if you'd like to have a tour of our facilities as well. The goal of the evening is to feed and serve you well. Come with an open mind and an appetite for good food (maybe even a glass of wine).

“A few months into this process, I heard of an organization called Chelsey's Dream Foundation and learned how it worked with Iowans for Adoption to help families like ours who are trying to bring one of these babies to a forever home. The Foundation was started by Chelsey’s parents after she died in her early twenties from ovarian cancer. Her one request was to use her legacy to fund adoptions. They have since helped several children find new, permanent families. “We personally have never received a grant from them. However, there is no greater mission than supporting a healthy future generation by giving each child a start in a loving forever family. We hold hope that somehow, with blood, sweat, and tears, the support of our family and community, and maybe a small miracle from an organization like Chelsey’s Dream Foundation, we will become one of those families who make adoption possible.” –Charissa Flege We’re so happy that Charissa shared her story with us and are thrilled to announce that we’ll be supporting Chelsey’s Dream Foundation moving forward. A big thank-you to all who submitted — the Livewell Clinic simply would not be the same without every one of you!

Summer-Worthy Learning Opportunities

LEARNING THAT DOESN’T FEEL LIKE SCHOOL

MENTALLY STIMULATING ACTIVITIES FOR SUMMER

FOR TEENAGERS: FAMILY DINNER PARTY Cooking teaches so many important skills: math, science, nutrition, concentration, cultural understanding, following directions, creativity, time management, and more. Even better, it doesn’t feel like learning; it feels like fun. Encourage your older children to take the reins for preparing regular meals throughout the summer. You can pick guiding themes, like “a trip to Mexico” or “pasta party,” but let them choose the recipes and prep the meals on their own. FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY: AN EDUCATIONAL FIELD TRIP Field trips always inspire excitement in students, and you’ll find the same goes for your family members. You can tailor your destination to the interests of your kids for maximum engagement. If you have a family of art lovers, head to a museum for some inspiration and discussion. Kids who prefer the outdoors will enjoy a nature walk or hike. You can bring along a field guide to identify flora and fauna. These trips may not pack the thrill of a water park, but they’re fun in an entirely different way.

Every summer, parents across the country have to deal with the same delicate problem. They want to make sure their kids continue to learn without feeling like they’re being assigned tasks. After all, summer homework is every child’s worst nightmare. Luckily, you don’t have to rely on math problems and book reports to keep your child’s development from taking a two-month vacation. Here are a few mentally stimulating activities that are as educational as they are fun. FOR LITTLE ONES: HOMEMADE BUBBLES Bubbles fascinate young children, so why not spend a day making your own solution and experimenting with different types of bubbles? The formula is simple: 1 part dish soap (Dawn or Joy work best) to 10 parts water. Optionally, you can also include 1/4 part glycerin. The process of making the solution will teach ratios, and finding creative ways to blow bubbles fosters problem-solving skills and creative thinking.
