Nilpeter Unveils New FA-26 Press

EskoWorld 2020 Cancelled

Esko announced the cancellation of its EskoWorld 2020 event. The annual technology-focused event for packaging professionals had been scheduled to take place fromApril 28-30 in Dallas,Texas. “More than 500 delegates and 70 expert speakers from countries around the world were due to attend this year’s EskoWorld,” Melissa Plemen, Esko Director of Marketing North America. “With efforts to contain the spread of coronavirus, including travel restrictions affecting much of Europe and other countries, not only was the safety of delegates a concern but we would also face the prospect of being unable to deliver the packed agenda of 140 workshops and new product demonstrations to our usual high standard.”

Nilpeter has announced the launch of the new FA-26 press, which the company said will assist converters in the flexible packaging market. The latest and wid- est flexo press the company has ever developed, the 670mm wide FA-26 presents a shift in product strate- gy. Nilpeter is entering new markets, with all the well- known Nilpeter features, in an attempt to provide new standards for flexibility, sustainability, fast job change- overs and automation. Nilpeter said it has seen increased market interest for quite some time now, both from its existing label print customers and from flexible packaging printers, geared toward inline printing of pouches, flow packs, form-fill-seal, as well as converting of shrink sleeves, in shorter runs and smaller batches. The new press gives printers the ability to print and create a fully functional laminate inline by utilizing solvent dry lamination or E-Beam.The E-Beam enables PET/PET instant cured lamination — a recyclable con- struction for flexible packaging — made possible, ac- cording to the company, by the high level of accuracy in manufacturing, and the accurate and automatic save and recall of process parameters.

drupa Postponed Until April 2021

drupa, the world’s leading trade fair for printing tech- nologies, has been postponed until April 20-30, 2021, due to the exponential spread of the coronavirus. Di- rector of drupa and Global Head Print Technologies of Messe Düsseldorf, Sabine Geldermann, provided an- swers concerning the print industry. How did you determine the new date? “Under normal circumstances” the year 2020 would have been a “trade fair rally” for Messe Düsseldorf, be- cause from August last year until this June almost all of Düsseldorf’s major world-leading trade fairs should have taken place — with drupa as the finale. Due to the influence of the coronavirus and the associated of- ficial decrees or restrictions, seven trade fairs planned for this spring have already been postponed to the sec- ond half of 2020 and to spring 2021. Since we need a time frame of around two months for drupa (due to its set-up, duration and dismantling), there were only limited options available. Having weighed up all the parameters and in view of the international trade fair calendar, the date chosen is the earliest and best possible date, which we have agreed together with our President and the VDMA as the supporting association. Under the current circum- stances, this date now allows the greatest possible planning security for all parties involved. Fortunately, we are now once again in a similar timeframe to the original, traditional May date of drupa. How has the global printing community responded to your announcement? The current situation is affecting all industries world- wide in an unprecedented way and the effects of the coronavirus are already having a drastic impact on public and economic life. As in other industries, the printing industry is feel- ing the effects of this in the form of short-time work, production downtime and supply bottlenecks — on a national and global level. In this situation, however, the health and protection of employees and partners takes precedence. The reaction of our international customers and partners to the postponement was therefore consis- tently positive and met with great understanding and acceptance.Three months before the regularly sched- uled start of drupa, we were thus able to give many exhibitors the opportunity at this point in time to re- schedule their upcoming logistical and very cost-in- tensive measures, such as the shipment of machines. Smithers Foresees Four Trends Shaping Packaging Between 2018 and 2028 the global packaging mar- ket is set to expand by almost 3 percent per annum, reaching over $1.2 trillion, according to research by Smithers in The Future of Packaging: Long-Term Strategic Forecast to 2028 . The global packaging market has increased by 6.8 percent from 2013 to 2018. Most of this growth has come from less devel- oped markets, as more consumers move to urban locations and subsequently adopting westernised lifestyles. This has boosted a demand for packaged goods, which worldwide has been accelerated by the e-commerce industry. Many drivers are having a significant influence on the global packaging industry. The four key trends, ac- cording to Smithers, that will play out across the next decade, include: Economic and demographic growth General expansion in the global economy is ex- pected to continue over the next decade, boosted by growth in emerging consumer markets. There is the prospect for short-term disruptions from the impact of Brexit, and any heightening of tariffs between the United States and China. In general however, incomes are expected to rise, increasing consumer income for spending on packaged goods. The report, just recently issued, does not take into consideration the recent economic fallout from the Coronavirus pandemic. The global population will expand and especially in key emerging markets, like China and India, the rate of urbanization will continue to grow. This translates into increase consumer incomes for spending on consum- er goods,as well as exposure to modern retail channels and the aspiration among a strengthening middle class to engage with global brands and shopping habits. Rising life expectancy will lead to an aging of the population — especially in key developed markets, like Japan — will increase demand for healthcare and pharmaceutical products. Simultaneously there is a need for easy opening solutions and packaging adapt- ed to the needs of elders. Another key phenomenon of 21st century living has been the rise in number of single-person households; this is pushing demand for goods packaged in smaller portion sizes; as well as more convenience like reaseal- ability or microwavable packaging. Uteco Open House (Cont’d from Page 5) designed HMI that allows an operator to access to a multi-page color display in order to operate the press and to have control of the different parameters related to printing; and LogiPack, an integrated robotic system, which takes care of the preparation of the expandable shaft and core for the next splice,as well as the lifting of the unprinted reel on the unwinder and the discharge of the printed reel from the rewinder for its disposal on a specific dedicated area. A live demonstration of the Rainbow Solventless Laminator allowed Open House attendees to witness how the web tension control of the machine allows for a variety of substrates to be used in the production of food packaging. The machine’s configuration, featuring two compact columns, reportedly allows for easy and safe access to all key points of the process. Rainbow 4.0 is supplied with a separate adhesive mixer, an automatic washing system of the coating nip-rollers, an integral transfer roller, and a “three roll- ers” laminating unit. Pneumatic opening of the dosing cylinders for easy cleaning is included. Representatives from Uteco’s partner company Ko- dak were on hand to discuss the Sapphire EVOW Dig- ital Press. The hybrid press offers digital and analogic printing for packaging, with uniform dot size and ac- curate dot placement of the ink, regardless of coverage or material, even at very high speeds.Water based inks guarantee the minimal environmental impact. Mario Mucciaccaro, Uteco North America’s Executive Vice President, stressed the point that the Sapphire is a production press capable of short and medium runs, promotional printing with reduced production time, one shoot printing, localized small batch manufacturing, per- sonalized products, lotteries, and customized advertising. The Importance of Training The topic of attracting, retaining, and training per- sonnel in the flexo industry is something Uteco has focused on for many years. It is, without question, the most pressing, ongoing concern for most flexo print- ing operations. Marco Verini, Uteco North America’s Service Director, spoke to Flexo Market News about training in the flexo industry and the ways in which it will dictate printers’ future success. Please discuss the importance of proper train- ing as it relates to the flexo industry (and spe- cifically operators running Uteco presses). Exhibitors traditionally work toward the dru- pa date with their newproducts: Much is already completed for June; exhibitors do not want to wait to present the new products to their cus- tomers. Does drupa now see itself confronted with alternative, virtual presentation formats?

above all, network. That is why drupa will remain the target the print industry is working toward even after the postponement. How do you believe print businesses can weather the storm caused by the pandemic? There is no doubt that there will be declines and last- ing economic setbacks. The government’s measures and aids are on the way. However, it is important that the industry does not suffer a complete standstill in production as a result of the current measures. Our in- dustry must continue to invest in the future in order to seize market opportunities, because print, with its so many different and extensive applications and forms of use, will continue to be indispensable in many mar- kets in the future. The exchange of ideas between in- dustry players and the necessary inspiration are key means to this end and are lived out and introduced in a future-oriented manner at leading world trade fairs such as drupa. The postponement represents a new, unprecedent- ed scenario for all concerned and requires a certain degree of flexibility. As in the past, we will continue to take every possible measure to carry over the suc- cessful status of drupa to the new date in 2021. It is our ambition and desire to organize another unique and successful drupa for our global customers in 2021. What changes will the postponement mean for drupa 2021?

good quality print. In larger operations there are press- room supervisors, quality control people, and Standard Operating Procedures that supervise and limit the vari- ables in the pressroom, but often in smaller operations everything is left to the press operator. We are finding that often the operator is also the one who calls us when there is a presumed machine mal- function and we find ourselves troubleshooting for a machine error when any number of process parame- ters could be the cause. Training, whether from an OEM on the equipment or from any of the schools on printing technologies and pre-press is the key to increased productivity, higher quality and decreased scrap including in extreme cas- es the rejected order. Flexo printing companies should always have a con- tinuous improvement program for operators, main- tenance, and all personnel in general. The obvious returns will be as previously stated in terms of quali- ty-related profits, but equally important is the personal growth of personnel and the satisfaction that comes with higher achievement, however small, which brings What steps should flexo printing companies take to improve training in the future?

es his expectations of an operator;you have the gas,you have the brake, you steer it and get to your destination. The problem is that flexo presses have evolved from hands-on mechanical machines to highly complex electronic machines integrating multiple systems. The electronics make information, feedback and control available to the operator but we find that many com- panies do not benefit from them because operators are not trained to use them. There are items such as “crush compensation” and “repeat correction” which optimize print quality in spite of defective plates or film of lower quality which are available to operators, but only operators with advanced skills or who have received advanced training know the benefit. Operators are often overwhelmed by a new piece of equipment and production demands. Advanced train- ing is appreciated by operators as an investment in them, and results increased quality, decreased waste and often improved processes. How is the flexo industry affected by inade- quate training of its operators? As an OEM, at Uteco we talk about training as it ap- plies to the operator’s ability to use the equipment, but the operator also has the responsibility of producing

ucts is an established phenomena, but since 2017 there has been a revived interest in sustainability fo- cused specifically on packaging. This is reflected in central government and municipal regulations, con- sumer attitudes and brand owner values communi- cated via packaging. The EU has pioneered this area with its drive toward circular economy principles. There is a particular fo- cus on plastic waste, and as a high-volume, single-use item plastic packaging has come under particular scrutiny. A number of strategies are advancing to ad- dress this, including substituting to alternative mate- rials, investing in the development of bio-based plas- tics, designing packs to make them easier to process in recycling, and improving recycling and processing of plastic waste. As sustainability has become a key motivator for con- sumers, brands are increasingly keen for packaging materials and designs that demonstrably show their commitment to the environment. With up to 40 percent of food produced worldwide not eaten —minimising food waste is another key goal for policy makers. It is an area where modern packag- ing technology can have a major impact. For example, modern flexible formats like high-barrier pouches and retort cooking add extra shelf-life to foods, and can be especially beneficial in less developed markets where a refrigerated retail infrastructure is missing. Much R&D is going into improving packaging barrier tech- nology, including the integration of nano-engineered materials. Minimizing food losses also supports the wider use of intelligent packaging to cut waste within distribu- tion chains and reassure consumers and retailers on the safety of packaged foods. Consumer trends The global market for online retailing continues to grow rapidly, driven by penetration of the Internet and smartphones.Consumers are increasingly buying more goods online. This will continue to increase through to 2028 and will see an elevated demand for packaging solutions — especially corrugated board formats — that can safely ship goods through the more complex distribution channels. More people are consuming products such as food, beverages, pharmaceuticals on-the-go. This is increas- ing demand for packaging solutions that are conve- nient and portable, with the flexible plastics sector one main beneficiary. In line with the move to single-person living, more

consumers — especially younger age groups — are inclined to go shopping for groceries more frequen- cy, in smaller quantities. This has driven growth within the convenience store retailing, as well as boosting de- mand for more convenient, smaller size formats. Consumers are taking a greater interest in their own health matters, leading to healthier lifestyles. Therefore this is boosting demand for packaged goods, such as healthy foods and beverages (e.g. gluten-free, organic/ natural, portion controlled) alongside non-prescrip- tion medicines and nutritional supplements. Brand owner trends The internationalization of many brands within the fast-moving consumer goods industry continues to rise, as companies seek out new high-growth sectors and markets.Increased exposure westernized lifestyles will accelerate this process in key growth economies through to 2028. E-commerce and the globalization of international trade is also stimulating a demand among brand own- ers for components, like RFID labels and smart tags, to protect against counterfeit goods, and enable better monitoring of their distribution. Industry consolidation in merger and acquisition ac- tivity in end-use sectors such as food, beverages, cos- metics, is also forecast to continue. As more brands come under the control of one owner, their packaging strategies are likely to become consolidated. The 21st Century consumer is less brand loyal. This is simulating an interest in customized or versioned packaging and packaging solutions that can create an impact with them.Digital (inkjet and toner) printing is providing a key means to do this, with higher through- put printers dedicated for packaging substrates now seeing their first installations. This further aligns with the desire for integrated marketing, with packaging providing a gateway to link into social media.
