The Best Fruits and Vegetables for Your Smile

Summer may be ending, but another exciting season is just beginning: harvest season! Your garden and store shelves are packed with in-season produce, each one offering their own benefits for your health. Check out which crops are best for your oral health below! An Apple a Day Not all fruits are created equal when it comes to tooth health. Raw apples, which usually have a higher pH than citrus fruits, are a great option because the flesh may help to brush away plaque as you chew. And because of the crunch, apples stimulate the production of saliva, which serves to disrupt the bad bacteria that settle on the teeth. Don’t Sneak These Foods Into the Movies Much like apples, crunchy fruits and vegetables are going to work wonders for your chompers. Consuming raw produce, like carrots, celery, and snap peas, will not only clean your gums and teeth as you eat, but much like apples, they also stimulate vital saliva production. These hard foods help to stimulate the bone growth of your kids dental arches as well! Eat raw, crunchy fruits and vegetables after meals to brush away the gunk your food left behind. ( Note : If your mouth hurts when you eat these foods, stop! This could be a sign of a larger issue — like a gum infection or a joint disorder — and your dentist can diagnosis the cause of this pain. In the meantime, stick to softer foods. See below!) Peter Rabbit’s Diet Leafy greens like kale, spinach, Swiss chard, and lettuce may not be the most flavorful foods in your garden, but their composition packs a nutrient-dense punch. Generally, foods with deep, rich colors have a multitude of nutrients. In particular, green vegetables contain high amounts of vitamin A, vitamin C, and calcium. All of these can be beneficial for your oral health. Your teeth are powerful, but the foods you eat can either damage or strengthen them. Dr. Jessica Sabo and her dental team can share additional tips and answer any questions you and your family may have about your diet and oral health. Schedule an appointment by calling 951.769.1616.
