Pioneering the Way for Aspiring Female DJs in South Africa
P roaudio Sound Press (PSP): As an upcoming female DJ in South Africa, could you share your journey into the music industry and how you discovered your passion for DJing and deep house mixes? DJ COCO BROWN: My journey into the music industry began in 2015 when I entered a DJ competition with a friend. Pearl Thusi and DJ Zinhle were searching for aspiring female DJs, and I was fortunate enough to be enrolled in Fuse Academy, DJ Zinhle's DJ school. After graduating in 2016, I embraced DJing professionally and pursued my passion for music wholeheartedly. Coming from a family with a strong musical inclination and working as a club promoter, I felt a need to share the music I loved the most – hip hop – with audiences and educate them through my mixes. PSP: Women's Month is a celebration of the achievements and contributions of women. How do you feel about being a prominent figure in the local music scene during this month, and what message would you like to convey to other aspiring female DJs?
DJ COCO BROWN : Being recognized as a prominent figure in the local music scene during Women's Month is an incredible validation of my dreams and the hard work I've put in over the years. It's an opportunity to inspire and encourage
other aspiring female DJs to fearlessly pursue their dreams.
My message to them is simple – have unwavering confidence in yourself and never take no for an answer. Believe in your talent, work tirelessly, and embrace your unique style. Women can achieve greatness in any industry, including music. PSP: Representation and visibility of women in the music industry are essential. What steps do you believe can be taken to uplift and empower more women DJs in the country? DJ COCO BROWN: To uplift and empower more women DJs in the country, it's crucial to give them more platforms and opportunities. It's fantastic to celebrate and recognize their achievements during Women's
Month, but supporting them throughout the year is equally important.
