EOHU advice for dealing with extreme cold gŏđŏ editionap.ca
The Yuletide weather forecast calls for the current deep freeze to continue on into the Christmas season. Mid-month tem- peratures dived well below the zero mark on the thermometer and appeared ready to stay there.
The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) issued an extreme cold alert through its website at www.eohu.ca as soon as the temperature began its plunge, and the Weather Network daily forecasts for the Ot- tawa region have called for night-time tem-
peratures of minus 20 or colder while the daytime highs have not managed to get above 10 below. Wind chill conditions make these temperatures seem even colder. Residents are advised to stay indoors if possible during the extreme cold. Even
brief periods outside without proper prepa- ration can pose a risk of either mild frostbite or the start of “exposure”, also known as hypothermia. The most vulnerable parts of the body in such cases are the extremities like the ears, nose, fingers and toes which can lose their core heat the fastest. During extreme cold conditions the most vulnerable are children and infants, seniors, the homeless, anyone who works outside, asthmatics, people living in houses with poor insulation or reduced heating capac- ity, and skiers and snowmobilers and others involved in winter recreation. Anyone who has to go outside should be sure to bundle up in layers and if on the road, make sure that their car or truck is winterized. Check the EOHU website for more tips on dealing with extreme cold weather and for treatment of any suspected cases of either frostbite or hypothermia. Ontario 01.! $+*+1./ŏ TORONTO | Local researchers have earned the respect of Ontario Nature. The South Nation Conservation Author- ity (SNC) made a presentation at a recent Ontario Nature workshop set up to share information and results on biodiversity off- setting studies. Biodiversity concerns the number and variety of animal and plant species found within a given region. Human activity, from extensive residential and commercial devel- opment to limited intrusions like hunting or fishing or nature walks, can affect biodiver- sity. The aim of biodiversity offsetting is to take actions that will benefit a species. SNC staff members Pat Piitz, science and research director, and Michelle Cavanagh, fish and wildlife resource technician, out- lined the work the regional conservation agency has done through a provincial pilot project under the Ontario Endangered Spe- cies Act dealing with at-risk grassland bird species like the bobolink. These birds use hay fields as nesting habi- tats at a time of the year that often matches the harvest season. SNC staff are working with a solar energy company to provide safe habitat sites within the watershed to offset the development of a new solar farm project. The SNC has about 400 acres of non-forest land that is now under assess- ment for potential nesting habitat use.
