Appeal Board I am honoured to serve as the public member on APEGA’s Appeal Board, having been appointed by the Government of Alberta in December 2024 to a three‑year term. In this role, I bring an independent perspective to the board and ensure that the public interest is embedded in its operations and protected through its decisions. The Appeal Board plays a vital role in maintaining fairness, transparency, and accountability within APEGA’s regulatory framework. Its mandate is to review decisions and actions of APEGA’s statutory committees—including the Investigative Committee, Discipline Committee, Practice Review Board, and Board of Examiners—and to safeguard the statutory right of appeal to natural justice, as outlined in the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act . This oversight helps members of the professions and the public to have confidence in the integrity of APEGA’s processes. For each hearing, appeal panels typically consist of a chair, three APEGA registrants, and the public member. During the year, the board reviewed multiple written and oral submissions from appellants. Each hearing was conducted with diligence, allowing appellants and respondents to present their cases fully and fairly. The board worked to balance efficiency with thoroughness, recognizing that every appeal represented an important matter for the individual and the professions. Decisions were made free of bias and with careful consideration of all evidence presented. Collaboration with APEGA staff, legal advisors, and other statutory committees provided valuable opportunities to align processes and share insights on emerging regulatory issues. I commend the professionalism and dedication of fellow board members and APEGA staff, whose contributions strengthened the integrity of the appeal process. I am privileged to contribute to the important work of the Appeal Board and to support APEGA’s mission of safeguarding the public while enabling the professions of engineering and geoscience to thrive in Alberta. APEGA and the Appeal Board have met the responsibilities of self-regulation and served the public interest well this year.
