MALAYSIAN TECHNOLOGY STRATEGIC OUTLOOK 2019/2020

MOBILITY

Mobility cluster represents a critical enabler for the country’s socio-economic development. Mobility refers to having access to different modes of transportation from walking, vehicle sharing to public transportation and so forth. Prudence dictates it should be affordable for everyone, sustainable and helping towards providing a better quality of life. Rapid transformation is changing the way people and goods travel within and across cities, regions, and countries. By 2030, annual passenger traffic will exceed 250 million passengers, with 102,433 million of total air passenger traffic was recorded across all Malaysian airports in 2018; vehicle usage currently at 22 million will rise to 140% (31 million) by 2030, corresponding with 131 million daily trips. Traffic congestion is among key challenges identified in causing productivity loss of RM5.5 billion per year. While geographically different especially in size and diversity, but rather serves as a weak point of comparison with regards to rail ridership, only 20% of public transport users in Malaysia use this mode of transportation as compared to 66% in Singapore. However, 82% of Malaysian households own a car, whereas in Singapore, it is reported that only 177 out of 1000 people in the population owns a car. Singapore is known to be an incredibly expensive place to own a car in the world. The Government continues to focus on improving public transport by increasing the modal share of 40% by 2030 and to meet the demands of the Rakyat for a reliable, environment- friendly, and modern mode of public transportation. Moreover, improved transportation services will bring efficient connectivity between the urban and rural areas, therefore spurring economic activities and contributing towards inclusive growth. The traditional transportation industry is in a flux. A new mobility ecosystem is emerging, setting the stage for immense innovation. Today’s industry players face a not-so-distant future in which they will have to change dramatically.

VEHICLE WILL RISE FROM 22 MILLION IN 2018 TO 140% (31 MILLION) BY 2030, CORRESPONDING WITH 131 MILLION DAILY TRIPS
