MALAYSIAN TECHNOLOGY STRATEGIC OUTLOOK 2019/2020

PETRONAS

The Technology Charting New Possibilities For Sustainability To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, our operations are equipped with the Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Sequestration (CCUS) Technology. For carbon capture and separation, the Membrane Contactor Technology that is the first in theworld offers wider CO 2 removal range and selectively absorbs CO 2 and H2S, while PN2 membrane, High Gravity Cryogenic Distillation (Cryomin) and Advanced Materials such as graphene are adopted for higher efficiency. The separated CO 2 is safely sequestered underground or stored in reservoirs. A portion of the separated CO 2 is also turned into high-value products, among them clean fuels for land transportation, Precipitated Calcium Carbonate and other mineral products. The long-term goal of PETRONAS’ Technology Agenda addresses four main themes — Clean Energy, Artificial Intelligence, Hyper-Connectivity and Advanced Materials. Among these, PETRONAS’ Facilities of the Future programme paves the way for revolutionised operating philosophy, by leveraging the use of subsea technologies, digitalisation, automation, robotics andmachine learning. Robotic operations are to replace human involvement to reduce hazard risks in harsh environments, minimise carbon footprint and bring cost down by 50%. The ultimate form of unmanned operation, the Subsea Factory, will soon be a reality. The pursuit for clean energy brings PETRONAS to uncharted waters. Apart from the two world’s first Floating LNG vessels, low-wind speed turbine and solar are other renewables being established. A strong sense of appreciation for resources has led to projects on biomass to chemicals, bio-based specialty

Theworldis inaprecariousstatewithwidespreadenvironmental issues, sustainability is key to survival. PETRONAS, while powering the nation and beyond amid volatile market evolutions, strives to play a pivotal role in creating a low- carbon future, through revolutionary innovations. The PETRONAS Technology Agenda steers in-house research and development efforts driven by about 500 technical talents headquartered in PETRONAS Research Sdn Bhd (PRSB), Bangi, towards fortifying Operational Excellence, creating Competitive Edge and securing Future Positioning technologies. Shaped by a farsighted vision, PETRONAS has rolled out a series of technology endeavours underpinned by sustainability, transitioning from grey to blue technologies with reduced carbon footprint and ultimately towards green technology. Multi-pronged approaches are underway to achieve this while offsetting the higher costs incurred. Furthermore, PETRONAS’ technical and engineering capabilities have cemented its position as a well-recognised global energy player. As a technical partner to Mercedes-AMG, PETRONAS’ Fluid Technology SolutionsTM has contributed to the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team’s 6 consecutive wins for the World Constructors’ Championship. Recently, PETRONAS became the only operator in the world with 2 floating LNG vessels with PFLNG DUA while its downstream mega-project Pengerang Integrated Complex in Johor, is on schedule for commercialisation.
