MALAYSIAN TECHNOLOGY STRATEGIC OUTLOOK 2019/2020

surfactants and even plant-based aviation fuel.

The first batch included 2,000 units of 100ml bottles, plans are afoot to produce more. Fuelled by passionate commitment, the process from formulation to distribution of the first batch took only one week amid MCO. With threats abound, technologies are deployed at critical work sites to keep pace with business needs while ensuring personnel’s safety and MCO-compliance. The SPOT (Secure Personnel Online Tracking) System was put in place for this very purpose. It combines four technologies, i) an algorithm to locate personnel; ii) a mobile App to track personnel movement, iii) an Ex-rated GPS-WiFi device to transmit location information (using GPS for outdoors and RSSI for indoors); and iv) analytics and visualisation of personnel movement to enable contact tracing. All this allows for prevention of the spread of COVID-19 among PETRONAS personnel and contractors. The movement tracking system was derived from PETRONAS’ Facilities of the Future research efforts, enhancing the original algorithm developed in 2019 meant for offshore applications. Besides SPOT, PETRONAS used drones with Artificial Intelligence to monitor social distancing among workers, and to detect anyone without a face mask. A technology agenda set well into the future is PETRONAS’ strategy to stay ahead through the changing eras, responsibly and sustainably. It is not just about the business, nor survival, but also about making sure every step taken leads to a better tomorrow, for all.

Meanwhile, efforts to enrich lives with a green touch continue with fuels and lubricants researches (novel additive for fuels; ionic liquid and graphene studied for future mobility), thermal management fluids for energy storage (management of cooling system in EV and Hybrids), among others. Hydrogen and its many possibilities are promising for a green future. PETRONAS is building its first hydrogen production testing facility, completewithproprietary and standard electrolysers. The system is designed to deliver about 50kg of clean hydrogen per day. Immediate Solutions With Technology Readiness Technological readiness has also enabled PETRONAS to contribute to the national battle against COVID-19 opportunely. PETRONAS proffered the Continuous Positive Airflow Pressure device, produced in collaboration with Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains and University College London Hospital, to cope with the hospitalisation of thousands of COVID-19 patients. The prototype was delivered in just 24 hours at PRSB despite the nationwide Movement Control Order (MCO). PETRONAS also formulated its very own medical grade sanitisers to further protect frontliners across the country. The formula was swiftly concluded within a day, it contains higher ethanol content than most commercial hand sanitisers and glycerin for outstanding effectiveness, yet still in accordance with WHO guidelines.

Fuelled by passionate commitment, PETRONAS took only one week amid MCO to formulate and distribute the first batch of hand sanitisers.

During the peak of COVID-19 hospitalised cases, PETRONAS produced The Continuous Positive Airflow Pressure device in collaboration with Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains and University College London Hospital.
