AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE

Auto or Manual control on Autonomous Technology in Malaysia? Windows of Opportunities Imagine a scene, not too distant in the future, where an elderly couple who live in the suburb are preparing themselves to visit their grandchildren who live in the city. Honey! Are you done already? Coming dear was the reply from his lovely wife. Amin snaps his fingers which triggers a hologram screen on his palm and pushes a single button on the screen, which was preprogramed to call for the autonomous taxi service. Suddenly a voice was heard saying, “vehicle ETA will be in 5 minutes time, please be ready, we will notify upon our arrival.” A fewmoments later the couple was comfortably seated in the AV shuttle. They are eager to hear the giggles and voices of their playful grandchildren. A voice-automated greeting plays out, “Please fasten your seatbelt. Traffic and weather are clear. Do enjoy the music that you have chosen.” Thirty minutes later, again, the voice alarms the couple, “We have arrived at your destination. Have fun & thank you, Encik Amin and Puan Rosy. Hope you have a terrific day with your loved ones, see you later.”

Connected Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) is the latest technology about to change our lives. Probably not yet in Malaysia, but for sure it will be reaching our shores, maybe within 10 years’ time or less. It has been hyped among auto manufacturers on the rise of driverless cars being showcased in auto shows which started to attract the non-auto manufacturers like Google, Amazon, Intel, Microsoft Nvidia and even a new start-up company. We might be accustomed or might not be aware of it during travelling where the pilot puts the plane in auto pilot mode where the plane can fly or even land on itself whilst the pilot monitoring it in the cockpit. As for autonomous cars, it is on the road where the car drives itself with the advent of the latest AI and deep learning working together with Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR ) systems and cameras as eyes and sensors that can navigate the vehicle from point A to point B. Come to think of it you might not even need a steering in an autonomous car. The autonomous vehicle is considered one of the emerging technologies that will be the next game changer in the transportation industry. Its development had gained speed and traction, especially in the era of our 4th industrial revolution and industry 4.0 even in Malaysian shores. This can be demonstrated by the emergence of start-up companies like eMoovit Technology Sdn. Bhd. and REKA in our own domestic ecosystem.
